Honors Program to Sponsor Trip to West Africa

The Honors Program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is pleased to announce a cross-cultural field trip to Senegal, West Africa, January 3-19, 2006. The program offers an opportunity to explore firsthand the rich history, arts and cultural life of one of the continent’s most vibrant countries.

The trip included activities such as lectures, workshops, and excursions to a variety of locations both around the capital city of Dakar as well as to parts of the Senegalese countryside. Participants will experience the rhythms and sounds of African music and dance, learn greetings and salutations in the Wolof language, and discover the friendly teranga (hospitality) for which the Senegalese are world famous. Excursions include a visit to Gorée Island – a United Nations World Heritage Site, a tour of the capital city’s landmarks, an outing to the holy city of Touba to learn about Islam in Senegal, a village visit to explore rural development issues, and a weekend stay in the country’s Petite Côte region along the Atlantic Ocean.

The program is open to interested students, faculty/staff, and alumni from the Long Island University community. Interested parties from other institutions are welcome to participate on a space-available basis and are encouraged to contact the program director for more information. Program dates are January 3-19, 2006, and the estimated cost is $2,200 which covers all lodging, meals, in-country transportation, and cross-cultural activities. The current estimate for international group airfare is $1,200, and is subject to change until the time group reservations are confirmed and paid for. Expenses not covered in the program fee include passport fees, immunizations, personal spending money, and transportation to New York for participants from outside the metropolitan region.
