Programs for Adult Students

The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is committed to providing adult students and community members, age 25 and older, access to a variety of specialized educational services. In addition to offering more than 255 undergraduate and graduate majors, C.W. Post has a number of exciting ways for adult students to gain knowledge and learn something new, without necessarily pursuing a degree.

Community Auditors Program: (audit only)

  • Audit undergraduate courses offered by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
  • Excludes critical language courses, per capita classes, and English writing courses
  • $185 per course
  • Registration begins one week prior to the start of the semester
  • Register with Continuing Education

Continuing Education: (non-credit or CEU credit)

  • Wide variety of workshops, courses and certificate programs
  • Located at Chase Building, 57 Northern Blvd., Greenvale, 2nd floor
  • Register with C.E. office by phone, fax, in-person or online
  • Tuition charges vary

Hutton House Lectures: (non-credit lectures)

  • Lectures in art, music, English, philosophy, history, political science
  • Offered quarterly single event or series
  • No tests, homework
  • Adults students of all ages (popular with senior citizens)
  • Charges vary
  • All courses held in Lorber Hall, an historic Georgian home
  • Register with Hutton House Lectures office in Lorber Hall, in person or by phone

Life Experience Credit: (knowledge gained outside the classroom)

  • Earn undergraduate college credit for work through demonstrated expertise related to your degree program, other than study in a two or four year accredited college (i.e.: on-the-job experience, extensive research on specific topic or topics)
  • Must complete 6 credits at C.W. Post before applying for Life Experience
  • Must apply for Life Experience before 96 credits are earned
  • Application process begins with Coordinator of Life Experience
  • Awarded for undergraduate credits only; graduate students also can apply for undergraduate credit if prerequisite work is needed for graduate school requirements

Lifetime of Learning: (for C.W. Post alumni only)

  • Must contact Alumni Relations Office to begin process
  • Registration begins first week of classes
  • Audit basis only, no college credit
  • $100 per semester for either one or two courses
  • Two classes maximum per semester
  • Course restrictions apply

Personal Enrichment: (non-matriculated)

  • Must apply in the Admissions Office
  • Usually for one semester; need Admissions approval to register for subsequent semesters and continue in a degree program
  • Can be taken for credit (full tuition) or audit (1/2 tuition)
  • Register with Academic Counseling or Adult Student Services

Senior Adult Program: (for students 65 years and older)

  • Must apply in the Admissions Office
  • Registration begins one week prior to start of semester
  • Pay ½ tuition if taken for credit or ¼ tuition for audit
  • Not applicable to institutes, workshops, continuing education, per capita classes, or studio art classes
  • Register in Adult Student Services

SERVICES FOR ADULT STUDENTS

Adult Student Services: (advisement and advocacy for students over age 25)

  • Evaluate prior coursework for transferability of college-level credits
  • Familiarize students with majors offered and discuss their academic and career goals
  • Refer to appropriate academic counselor for follow-up advisement and registration

Return-to-Learning Program: (workshop to "brush-up" on skills)

  • Learn how to enhance study and test-taking skills
  • Offered every spring semester
  • Free for enrolled and prospective students
  • Sponsored by Adult Student Services

Returning Adult Scholarship: (awards for full- and part-time students)

  • $500/semester award for part-time students
  • $1,000/semester award for full-time students
  • Renewable for up to two years
  • Based on financial circumstances and availability of scholarship funds
  • FAFSA form must be on file with Office of Financial Assistance
  • Application required; available in Adult Student Services


National Honor Society for Adult Students

  • Alpha Sigma Lambda
  • C.W. Post adult undergraduates over age 25 who rank in the top 10 percent of their class
  • Must earn at least 24 credits at C.W. Post with appropriate G.P.A.
  • Awarded annually each April
