S.C.A.L.E. Program

All the Details of S.C.A.L.E.

Qualified juniors and seniors in participating high schools are eligible to apply to the S.C.A.L.E. program and to register for undergraduate courses which they take at their high schools through C.W. Post. S.C.A.L.E. students earn high school and college credit concurrently.

Each participating S.C.A.L.E. school has a S.C.A.L.E. coordinator who facilitates the program in that high school. Through the S.C.A.L.E. coordinator, students apply to the program and register for classes. S.C.A.L.E. coordinators are listed along with their respective schools under “S.C.A.L.E. Schools” on the website.

Students complete an application/registration form and submit a non-refundable thirty dollar application fee (check or money order payable to C.W. Post). The high school’s S.C.A.L.E. coordinator sends the application/registrations and a current cumulative academic transcript for each applicant to the S.C.A.L.E. Office. Students should have an unweighted cumulative average of 80 or better in core academic areas of English language arts, mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences, world languages. After we review the applications, students are notified at home by letter of their acceptance into the program. Applications that are not accepted and their application fees are returned to the S.C.A.L.E. coordinator at the high school. All application/registrations must be received from the high school by the deadline – October 1 in the fall and February 1 in the spring.  NO LATE REGISTRATIONS, NO INDIVIDUAL MAILINGS, NO MULTIPLE MAILINGS FROM A SCHOOL.

We register accepted S.C.A.L.E. students for the classes they have requested on their application/registration form. Registered students receive four documents: a written confirmation from the university of their registration, a S.C.A.L.E. acceptance letter, an FAQ about S.C.A.L.E., and a tuition bill from the C.W. Post Bursar’s Office (516 299 2323). The tuition bill needs to be paid as soon as it is received. Parents/guardians receive an informational letter from the S.C.A.L.E. Office and an FAQ about S.C.A.L.E.

Just so you are aware:

  • The application fee is not applied to the tuition bill.
  • Students with unpaid balances from the fall semester CANNOT register for the spring semester; they will not be late registered. Students who wish to drop a course must follow the Drop policy. Nonpayment of a tuition bill results in bad debt.
  • Registration is conducted on a semester basis (fall and spring) for most courses; only a very few courses are full year.
  • C.W. Post reserves the right to cancel courses with fewer than fifteen registered S.C.A.L.E. students per high school class.
  • S.C.A.L.E. tuition is vastly discounted; it is about fifteen percent of on campus tuition and lower than tuition at many local and community colleges. TUITION FOR THE 2007-2008 ACADEMIC YEAR IS $115 PER CREDIT ($345 FOR A 3 CREDIT COURSE).  Beyond this deep discount, there is no additional financial assistance for students taking S.C.A.L.E. courses. Students who matriculate at C.W. Post after high school may become eligible for financial assistance as on campus undergraduate matriculated students. The Financial Assistance Office at 516 299 2338 can provide more information on financial assistance for students who want to continue their educations here at C.W. Post after high school graduation.

Drops
Students must complete a C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University drop form if they intend to drop a course. The form needs to be signed by both parent and school agent (guidance counselor, S.C.A.L.E. teacher, assistant principal, or principal) and received by the S.C.A.L.E. Office on the C.W. Post Campus by the Drop Dates – NOV. 15 for fall semester and for full year courses and April 15 for spring semester courses. After the Drop Dates, students remain registered for their classes and are responsible for payment of full tuition and any accrued fees.

Grades
At the end of each semester, a semester grade report for each student is forwarded by the university to each student and to the parent or guardian. Grading procedures are those established by the faculty of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Grades are recorded as follows: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, F.

Student Course Load
College courses are taken in lieu of senior high school level courses. Student course load will be mutually agreed upon by the student and parent, the high school, and the S.C.A.L.E. Director. In no case will the student’s course load exceed fifteen semester hours of college credit study. Courses offered through the S.C.A.L.E. Program carry both high school credits assigned by the participating secondary school and college semester hour credits in accordance with the hourly guidelines established by New York State Education Department and designated by the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Transferability of Credit
The overwhelming majority of students have their S.C.A.L.E. credits accepted by other institutions. Students and families should remember, however, that transferability of credit is determined by the college or university receiving the credits. Questions about transfer of credits should be addressed to the receiving institution. Students and families for whom transferability is a deciding factor in participating in S.C.A.L.E., should verify that their credits will transfer to the institution(s) and program(s) to which they are likely to apply BEFORE registering for S.C.A.L.E.

Official Transcripts
Official transcripts including the spring semester are available after July 15. To request an official transcript, visit the C.W. Post Campus SIS on the website by clicking here or call 1 800 646 1858, or come to the Registrar’s Office in Kumble Hall on campus. There is a nominal fee for official transcripts.
