As a recent addition to the staff of the Hillwood Art Museum I am amazed the fast-paced environment and the warmth of the students toward the staff. I am lucky to have been able to take on several projects since my first day in early July.

In November the Museum, along with Coe Hall at Planting Fields Foundation, hosted a two-day conservation workshop. This New York State Council on the Arts funded event allowed museum professionals from the tri-state area to meet, discuss, and learn better ways to take care of their collections and historic structures. The presenters discussed the conservation of textiles and paintings, the importance of an emergency response plan, and how to better care for historic buildings.

The highlight of the workshop was hearing Dr. Donny George, former director of the Iraq Museum; speak about his experiences during the opening days of the war. His personal account of the state of the museum and its collections was moving and informative. His talk underscored our later discussions about having and implementing an emergency plan.

Metropolitan Museum of Art and Hillwood Art Museum Share Resources

Opening February 26, 2008 the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition, Radiance from the Rain Forest: Featherwork in Ancient Peru will feature several works of art from Hillwood Art Museum’s Collection. The exhibition, located in the newly redesigned Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, showcases the brilliantly colored feather works from ancient Peruvian cultures. From the third millennium B.C. onward, feathers served various ceremonial and secular purposes throughout pre-conquest Peruvian history. Radiant blues, yellows, reds, and greens embellished high-status apparel and accessories such as ear ornaments, pectorals, fans, headdresses, and miniature ritual offerings in silver and cloth.
