The English Language
Institute was created for non-native speakers of English who
wish to improve their English language skills for professional purposes
or to meet college or graduate school entrance requirements.
There are several programs: the Intensive English
Immersion Program, TOEFL preparation and the shorter 40-hr.
and 30-hr. English as a Second Language Courses.
Intensive
English Immersion Program:
Fall 2002:
Monday through Friday
1:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.
Sept. 9-Dec. 6 (no class Sept. 16, Nov. 28 & 29)
The intensive course
set in an immersion environment is designed to strengthen and reinforce
the four skills. Caring teachers will work with you to develop your
language skills. The goal of the program is to improve your language
proficiency in approximately 12 weeks. The course is offered
in the Summer and the Fall. It is strongly recommended that international
students in need of ESL seeking to enroll in C.W.Post regular academic
programs attend the summer program prior to their enrollment in
the Fall semester.
Classes are offered at
the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.
Classes are limited to
20 students each, covering the four basic skill areas :
A certificate of completion
is awarded at the conclusion of the program.
Students enrolled in
the Intensive program are eligible for F-1 student visas.

Summer and eligible students
in the Fall (those enrolled in C.W. Post academic degree programs)
will stay on campus in a double-room, suite-style dormitory.

AS A SECOND LANGUAGE COURSES
40-HOUR AND 30-HOUR
PROGRAMS:
Courses are
offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels to non-English
speaking adults. These courses are designed to improve the
speech, reading and writing of adults whose native language is not
English. Four skill areas—conversation (listening and
speaking), grammar, reading and writing--will be covered at the
appropriate level and with the specific functional needs of the
students in mind.
All students who register
will be tested to determine the most appropriate level of instruction.
All courses are taught
by trained professionals in a positive atmosphere at Long Island
University's C.W. Post Campus and/or at our new Glen Cove site.
Courses meet for 10 weeks
in the Spring and in the Fall and students have a choice of attending
a 40-hour program in the evenings or a 30-hour program on Saturdays.
