Elective courses
In addition to the ten required courses (30 credits), students in the ISY program need to take two elective courses (6 credits) and a comprehensive exam, or a 6 credit thesis.

Elective courses are normally chosen from those offered by the department. Other selections require the approval of the graduate director.

Comprehensive Examination or Thesis
Before graduation the candidate must either complete a thesis on an approved topic (see CSC 706, 708), Information Systems Thesis or pass a comprehensive examination integrating material from the required courses. The student who elects to write a thesis has the responsibility of selecting a topic, finding a faculty member who will agree to serve as a thesis advisor, and obtaining the department chairperson's approval. These steps must be completed at least 30 days before thesis course registration for CSC 706. Only one thesis course may be taken per semester. Each student who selects the thesis option must present an oral defense of his or her thesis to a faculty committee. Note: No credit toward the degree requirements is granted for the first half of the thesis requirement CSC 706 until the completion of CSC 708 at which point the student will earn 6 semester hours of elective credit.

Fast Track program in Information Systems
The Fast Track Program is offered on intensive weekends for 16 months and is designed to provide working professionals with an accelerated program of study. Course requirements are the same as those of the normally paced MS, Information Systems program. Fast Track students join a cohort of no more than eighteen students who attend classes together for the entire program.

To qualify for admission into the IS Fast Track Program students must have attained at least a 3.25 undergraduate GPA and have at least two years professional experience in Information Systems or a related field. In addition, students are expected to have knowledge at least equivalent to CSC 502, 504, 506, 540, and 554.

Students must earn a grade of B or better for every course; the receipt of a lower grade will result in a transfer to the regular Information Systems program.

Information Systems Award
The John T. Keane III Memorial Award honors the graduate director who was integrally responsible for the creation and success of the graduate Information Systems Program. It is awarded annually to the Information Systems degree recipient who attains the highest overall cumulative grade point average.
