What you need to know:
- We offer the full Master of Science in Library and Information Science (M.S.L.I.S.) program here in our Manhattan location.
- We're housed in the renowned Bobst Library of New York University, an outstanding research facility in the heart of Greenwich Village, overlooking Washington Square.
- The convenient location offers students access to the world's premier libraries, museums, special collections, and experts in the library world.
- We have a long-established and unique optional concentration in Rare Books and Special Collections This program, led by nationally and internationally recognized expert Dr. Deirdre Stam, offers our students one-of-a-kind opportunities in the rare books/special collections world of NYC and beyond.
- A second option is the advanced certificate program in Archives and Records Management, an area that recently has seen tremendous growth in employment opportunities. This certificate can be earned within the 36-credit M.S.L.I.S.
- Students need not select a concentration and can graduate as information specialists with interests in everything from reference, cataloging, public, corporate or legal librarianship to the digital world of metadata, preservation and conservation, digital libraries, and usability. Special topics classes that change from semester to semester appeal to our students’ varied interests.
- Our students benefit from valuable internships at top institutions in New York and beyond. The required internship has proven to be one of Palmer’s signature assets, leading, as internships so often do, to full-time positions at prime employers including the Morgan Library and Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, the New-York Historical Society, Columbia University, Yale University, New York University, to name few.
- We boast an excellent dual master’s program with NYU that is aimed at addressing the critical need for scholar-librarians. Students in this program receive two master’s degrees (our M.S.L.I.S. and NYU’s M.A.) but credits required for each individual degree are reduced.
Program overview:
- The program consists of twelve 3-credit courses, five of which are required.
- Students can earn up to six credits prior to acceptance. These credits will be applied to the degree when the student officially matriculates.
- Palmer has rolling admissions and students may apply to start in the fall, spring or summer semester.
- Because most of our students are working, we try to be creative in our class scheduling, offering classes not only in the evenings but also on weekends, sometimes for a 6-week term instead of the normal 14 weeks (with extended class sessions). In the summer, classes may meet for five full days or over a long weekend.
- A full-time program director is available at the Palmer office in Manhattan to better serve the students.
