Teaching
In all my courses students are exposed to thinking about the interactions of people and their environments. I have taught components of human and physical geography, spanning meteorology, national parks, urban geography and conservation. Students learn about interconnections of the solid earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and human activities.
I also teach the geography of the United States and Canada. In this course, students see how their country has been shaped naturally and by human activities. They learn how as responsible citizens they and their companions have great influence on the current and future application and distribution of the great wealth that is the United States.
Research in Geography
My research interests include national parks. National parks have been established to preserve natural wonders while at the same time allow for present day enjoyment, a formidable task! My fieldwork and papers have shown how parks around the United States and Canada, and more recently in Australia, try to manage these conflicting goals.
Outcomes Assessment: Campus Activities, Professional Presentations and Consultation.
As the public calls for more accountability by colleges and universities, outcomes assessment has become a vital part of higher education. At C.W. Post, I have served as co-chair of the campus outcomes assessment committee since its inception in 1997.
In 2003, Long Island University was re-accredited by our regional accrediting agency, the Middle States Commission of Higher Education. This accomplishment was the result of dedicated faculty and staff. I served as co-chair of the Middle States accreditation process.
I have served as a peer evaluator for the Middle States Commission.
With this expertise, I, along with a colleague, have led workshops at national and local assessment conferences, including invited presentations at the annual meeting of the Middle States Commission of Higher Education, the North Carolina State Undergraduate Assessment Symposium, and the Indianapolis University and Purdue University Indianapolis Assessment Institute (IUPUI). We have served as assessment consultants for colleges and universities who are seeking to improve student learning and their outcomes assessment activities.
My recent publications include articles about national park history and management, developing an assessment culture on a college campus, and an interactive CD allowing students to learn geography using modern technology.
