Mark Pires
Assistant Professor of Geography, Department of
Earth and Environmental Science
C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
I teach courses in human and physical geography, as well as in
natural resources conservation. My primary interests are in the
areas of human-environment relationships, spatial aspects of regional
development, and the geography of Africa.
My research experience includes an investigation of natural resource
management for the production of biomass energy in West Africa.
Future research interests, both home and abroad, include issues
such as water supply and solid waste disposal in the greater New
York metropolitan region, and the establishment and management of
biosphere reserves for environmental conservation in the U.S. and
Africa.
In addition to my interests in geography and the environment, I
am committed to promoting student participation in cross-cultural
and international educational exchange opportunities during their
college experience. I strongly encourage students to consider the
value of such opportunities as they prepare for personal and professional
lives in what will be a much "smaller" world in the 21st Century.
