Graduate Program in Environmental Studies

About the Program

Program Goals

The Graduate Program in Environmental Studies provides leadership in the science and management of natural resources and environmental systems. Since 1979, the program has distinguished itself as the first and foremost graduate environmental studies program on Long Island and in the NY metropolitan area. It is closely tied to the needs of industry and dedicated to solving real world problems. This is evident in our management and science concentrations where education, practice, and scholarship are gained through experience in the classroom and in the field. Through the internship and thesis, students are equipped to tackle real-world problems and shape environmental strategies for the 21st century as scientists, administrators, planners, and teachers in public and private institutions concerned with the Earth's environment.

The Curriculum

A Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies covers several academic disciplines: biology, chemistry, earth science, geology, geography, public administration, computer science, economics, and philosophy.

The 30-33 credit program of study offers two major areas of concentration: Environmental Science with specializations in ecology, marine and coastal studies, and geological environments; and Environmental Management with specializations in regional planning, environmental politics, urban environment and planning, and land use studies. Thesis research and internships are offered through the university, industry, governments, and non-governmental organizations.

Campus Location and Resources

The 308-acre C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University provides excellent academic facilities and is centrally situated in a region with a variety of contrasting environments: less than an hour from New York City, close to the Atlantic Ocean along the south shore of Long Island, and the bays and estuaries of Long Island Sound. The nature preserves, national and state parks, developed industry, and other sites in this suburban area constitute many unique opportunities for study and research.

More than 320 full-time faculty members, many of who are award winning teachers and researchers, serve students at the campus. The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library houses more than 2.3 million volumes as part of a university-wide system, and a section of the library is designed particularly for this program. A special collection houses journals and books devoted to the Long Island environment.
