Graduate Programs

The Department offers the following degree programs leading to the Master of Science in:
Applied Mathematics, classical mathematics or computer option
Mathematics for Secondary School Teachers
Mathematics Education, in conjunction with the School of Education.

Assistantships
Graduate assistantships are available for qualified students. Recipients are required to tutor in our Math Lab in exchange for tuition remission and, in some cases, a stipend as well.

Admission requirements
For full matriculation: an undergraduate degree with a B or better average and a one year calculus sequence with grades of B or better. A student who does not meet the minimum requirements may be accepted on a limited matriculant status.

Applied Mathematics
There are two options offered in this program:
- Classical Mathematics
- Computer Mathematics
Students must complete 36 credits of graduate course work: 24 credits of required and 12 credits of elective courses for the classical option, and 18 credits of required and 18 credits of elective courses (of which as many as 9 credits may be taken in the Computer Science department) for the computer option.

Besides course requirements students must choose one of the following options:
1. After completing 30 credits, deliver a lecture to a committee consisting of three members of the mathematics department on a topic previously approved by the chair of the committee.
2. Write a thesis in mathematics which counts for 6 credits of elective courses.

Mathematics for Secondary School Teachers
Students must complete 36 credits of graduate courses, 21 credits of required courses and 15 credits of elective courses. The student can take up to 6 credits of approved elective courses outside the department.
Students must also choose from the following two options:
1. Deliver a lecture on an approved topic suitable for presentation to a class of secondary school mathematics students.
2. Write a thesis in mathematics which counts for six elective credits.

Master of Science: Middle Childhood Education (5-9)
The master of science degree program will prepare you to become licensed as a mathematics teacher to grades 5-9 by the New York State Department of Education.

Master of Science: Adolescence Education (7-12)
This degree is in conjunction with the School of Education. Students take 18 credits of graduate courses in mathematics, 12 credits of required and 6 credits of electives, and 21 credits of graduate courses in Education. Besides the course work students are required to take a comprehensive examination consisting of two parts. The first part consists of a lecture suitable for a class of secondary school math students. The second part is a written examination that tests the student's knowledge of the main concepts studied in his or her required mathematics courses. This portion will be given once per semester.

We have fourteen full-time faculty whose areas of research include Topological Groups, Probability Theory, Differential Geometry, Number Theory, Dynamical Systems and Computer Graphics, Real Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Combinatorics and History of Mathematics. Many of our graduates have gone on to receive Ph.D.'s from prestigious institutions.
