The Department of Political Science/International Studies at the C.W. Post Campus offers programs leading to the B.A. and M.A. degrees. In addition, there is an accelerated program leading to the BA/MA degrees in five years. The department has seven full-time faculty members who it supplements with a distinguished visiting faculty representing major core areas of the United Nations.
Since a number of students are interesting in teaching Social Studies, the department includes courses which help lead to certification in New York State. Another large group of students are interested in going on to law school and while the American Bar Association does not recognize a set pre-law curriculum, one of the department's faculty members serves as the campus-wide pre-law advisor while teaching Constitutional Law.
The department is very active in placing students in internships. While most internships are part-time and non-paid, there are full-time paid internships in the New York State Assembly and Senate in Albany in the spring of the students' junior and senior years. Other internships are available to selected students in law offices, with judges, and at the United Nations.
The department has a full panopoly of extra-curricular activities including the Political Science Association, the International Studies Association, the Pre-law Association, the Young Republican Club and Young Democrat Club. International Studies majors have been very active in the Model UN conferences held in New York City at which they have won several awards.
Graduating seniors with excellent grade point averages may be eligible to be inducted into two national honor societies: Pi Gamma Mu and Pi Sigma Alpha.
