The Track System

Given that our students are likely to follow a number of different paths (e.g., graduate school, the job market), the tracks presented below are designed to provide students with groups of courses, which can be tailored to reflect their individual interests. The courses that make up each track are recommended, not required. In addition, these tracks are not mutually exclusive. Depending upon a student’s interest, he or she may choose to follow the suggested courses from more than one track. Each track leads to the minimum number of credits (33) required of a Psychology major. We expect, however, that most of our majors will take additional Psychology credits.

The General Graduate Track
This track is designed for students who plan to continue their education beyond a bachelor’s degree. A career in Psychology (e.g., teaching, research, practice) usually requires an advanced degree. Be sure to talk to your professors about whether or not this career goal is right for you.

• Personality: Research and Theory (PSY 30)
• Social Psychology (PSY 32)
• Abnormal Psychology (PSY 63)

The Abnormal Psychology Track
This track is designed for those students interested in the causes and treatments of psychological problems.

• Tests and Measurements (PSY 24)
• Personality: Research and Theory (PSY 30)
• Abnormal Psychology (PSY 63)
• Systems and Theories of Psychotherapy (PSY 64)

At least two of the following:

• Developmental Disabilities (PSY 29)
• Humanistic Psychology (PSY 65)
• Psychosomatics: Bodily Protest (PSY 68)
• Applied Behavior Analysis (PSY 75)

The Applied Behavior Analysis Track
This set of courses is intended for those students who have an interest in the analysis of behavior, both as a general approach and as a treatment modality.

The Applied Psychology Track
This track is designed for those students who are interested in the application of psychology in a range of different areas.

• Industrial and Organizational Psychology (PSY 47)
• Abnormal Psychology (PSY 63)
• Applied Behavior Analysis (PSY 75)

The Developmental Psychology Track
This track is designed for students with an interest in normative developmental processes, especially in children, but also across the lifespan.

Two appropriate Special Topics (PSY 41) courses (which do not carry Psychology credit) such as:

The Neuroscience Track
This track is designed for students with an interest in the brain and its relation to behavior.

The Social Psychology Track
This track is designed for those students interested in the prediction of people’s thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors based on situational factors and the real or imagined presence of other people.
