Financial Management Association International (FMA)
The Department of Finance sponsors a student chapter of the Financial Management Association International (FMA). Founded in 1970, the Financial Management Association International is a professional organization that has over 5,000 members in business worldwide (academicians, senior executives, research analysts, etc.) and a global leader in developing and disseminating knowledge about financial decision making.
FMA's National Honor Society (NHS) is the only international honorary that specifically recognizes the academic achievements of finance students. Established in 1974, the NHS allows students to distinguish themselves from their peers when entering the job market. Qualifying undergraduate and masters level students are recognized for their outstanding performance by receiving the FMA National Honor Society scroll and lapel pin and by having their name posted on the student section of FMA's website for one year.
The C.W. Post Chapter of the FMA is certified as both an FMA National Honor Society (NHS) and a regular FMA Student Chapter by the national FMA. The Chapter has earned the 2005 and 2006 Bronze National Honor Society (NHS) Membership Development Awards (Nationwide, 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 6 Bronze were awarded in 2005; 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 10 Bronze were awarded in 2006). Since 2004, the Chapter has utilized a budget of more than $6,000, more than $4,000 of which has been raised by members of the Chapter from various fundraisers. Seven Chapter members took participation in the 2006 FMA Student Leaders' Conference in the New York City and three members attended the 2006 R.I.S.E. symposium at the University of Dayton.
Members of the Chapter gain hands-on experience in investment management through a semester-based simulated investment contest and close to $2000 cash awards have been given out to winning contestants for the past five contests. In addition, in many member meetings held, more than 10 guest speakers from the industry have come and made presentations to the members.
The Chapter is to familiarize students with finance as a career path and the skill set required by various financial positions. It also provides an opportunity to cultivate leadership and organizational skills for student leaders. The Chapter provides free tutoring services for students experiencing difficulties in fundamental finance courses. It also serves as a network for finance students.
