Awards Day: May 10, 2008
Commencement: May 11, 2008
Eligibility Requirements
May Commencement exercises are open to those students whose degrees were conferred in September 2007 and January 2008 and those who are candidates for graduation in May 2008.
For those who are candidates for graduation in May, please make sure you have filed an application for graduation. Undergraduates can complete this form with their academic counselor in Kumble Hall. Graduate students may obtain this form either from their academic counselor, the Records Office in Kumble Hall or the University's Web site at www.liu.edu/cwpost (click on “Registrar/Transcripts” and then click on “Applying for Graduation.”) Students who filed their degree applications after the deadline (February 15, 2008) will automatically have their degree awarded at the next conferral, which is September 2008.
Be sure to check with your academic counselor to confirm that ALL academic degree requirements will be completed.
Don't forget to settle all outstanding financial commitments (i.e., library debts, security fines, etc.) See the Student Information System (www.liu.edu/sis) to view the holds, if any, on your record. Check to see that your degree application has been received and processed successfully, and that there are no blocks on your account.
Undergraduate Seniors – Residential students must attend at least one Senior Class Commencement meeting in order to be allowed to stay on campus during Senior Weekend. It is recommended that commuter students as well as residential students attend one of the meetings to be apprised of the upcoming activities involving Senior Weekend. The meetings will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. in the Hillwood Commons Cinema. For information call Office of Student Life & Leadership Development at (516) 299-2800. back to top

Green and Gold Graduation Pledge Graduates are invited to participate in the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility. If they choose to do so, they are making a promise to evaluate the broader consequences of any job they take. This is the third year that students can volunteer to take the Green and Gold Pledge which states: “As a graduate of Long Island University , I pledge to be attentive to the social and environmental consequences of my actions and to improve these aspects in my home, work and community.” By taking this voluntary pledge, you will be joining students from other prestigious regional higher learning institutions, including Columbia University , Hunter College , Fordham University and Manhattan College , as well as over 130 universities nationwide. Students can voluntarily sign up through their academic counselor when they file for graduation.
Green Pledge ribbons are worn by students on commencement day. Students can pick up their ribbons on Commencement, Sunday May 11, prior to 9:30 a.m. Undergraduate students can receive their ribbon in front of Room 119 of Humanities Hall. Cap and Gown The black cap and gown, which you wear for Commencement, has a long tradition. Caps, gowns and hoods were first worn at university functions in Europe during the Middle Ages when monks and students found them necessary for warmth in the cold and drafty castles and centers of learning. Until well into the nineteenth century, it was customary for many American college students to wear gowns while in daily residence or at meals. This practice has ceased to exist and, except for some British and European schools, few colleges request students to wear gowns except at Commencement exercises.
