Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science
B.S. in Health Education
Health teachers play an important role in our local school districts.
They are responsible for educating young children and adolescents
about personal safety issues including violence, injuries, healthy
eating habits, stress management, exercise, STDs, family and relationship
issues, and substance abuse.
Our bachelor's degree in Health Education which is skills-based
(i.e. decision-making, refusal skills, etc.) provides a broad-based
curriculum, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, that prepares
you to help different age groups (K-12) make informed health-related
choices.
Our courses explore the latest trends in health information and
research and cover such topics as basic first aid, human sexuality,
marriage and parenting, physical fitness, and handling emotions
in everyday life. Health education courses include elementary methods
in health education, secondary methods in health education, nutrition
methods, study of the exceptional child, student teaching and the
accompanying seminar. You will take classes in biology, which will
give you a solid base for understanding human anatomy, evolution,
reproduction, organ functions, and heredity traits. Prior to graduation,
you will have the opportunity to get involved in clinical experiences
at nearby schools.
