Mission Statement
The Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science offers teacher preparation programs in Health Education, Physical Education and a combined curriculum of Health and Physical Education leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Health and Physical Education programs prepare graduates to teach in elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. These programs have been designed to provide the greatest versatility in qualifying graduates for new employment opportunities.

Students may qualify for a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education or Physical Education by completing 129 credits (145 credits dual major) and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.75 with a 2.80 average in the major to be eligible for student teaching. A grade of C- or below in any HPE required course must be repeated by all health and physical education majors. Students may also work toward a joint degree in both Health and Physical Education by completing additional required course work.

The Department of Health and Physical Education is aware of the need for competent teachers. Therefore, students are involved in clinical experiences prior to student teaching in nearby elementary, junior, and senior high schools as observers and participants. This, coupled with a strong background in their specialization, will help prepare our graduates for the challenges of a future career.

Prior to acceptance to the teacher track program, the student's academic progress must be reviewed and assessed by the faculty. The faculty will approve each candidate for methods and student teaching. The Department has a policy handbook which is available to all majors. It is the responsibility of the students to read the handbook and be familiar with all requirements.
