Criteria
This federal grant program is designed to provide assistance
to full- or part-time undergraduate students. Students
and their families must meet certain financial criteria

high school guidance offices and college financial aid
offices. |
Amount
Current awards range from approximately $400 to $4,000
a year. Actual awards vary from year to year based on
current legislation and student's enrollment status. |

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) |
Criteria
Undergraduate students who are eligible for a Pell Grant
and have exceptional needs are eligible. These grants
provide a source of assistance for limited income families. |

high school guidance offices and college financial aid
offices. |
Amount
Grants range from $100 to $4,000 per year. |

Work Study/America Reads Program |
Criteria
This program provides jobs for full- or part-time students
in financial need. Summer employment is also available. |
Application

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be obtained from
high school guidance offices and college financial aid
offices. |
Amount
Students can earn $6.25 per hour and above. Average earnings
during the academic year range from $1,500 to $3,000. |

Perkins Loan |
Criteria
Full-time students in need may be eligible to borrow for
their undergraduate and/or graduate studies. If funding
permits, graduate students may be considered. |
Application
Application is made by filing the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which may be obtained from
high school guidance offices and college financial aid
offices. |
Amount
Undergraduate students may borrow up to $15,000 for their
studies. Annual amounts are determined by the C.W. Post
Financial Assistance Office. The total amount for both
undergraduate and graduate studies is $30,000. |
Repayment
Repayment begins six months after graduation or when a
student stops attending school at least half time (6 credits
per semester) at 5% interest. The loan has a special cancellation
provision for students employed in specific service jobs. |

William D. Ford Direct Loans (subsidized/unsubsidized) |
Criteria
These subsidized and unsubsidized loans are available
to full- and part-time matriculated students making satisfactory
academic progress in a degree granting program. Eligibility
for these loans is determined by the C.W. Post Financial
Assistance Office. The subsidized loan is based on financial
need. The unsubsidized loan is not based on need. |
Application
Application is made each year by filing the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a Direct Loan
Master Promissory Note which will be sent to the student's
home for completion as a new Direct Loan borrower. New
students must attend an entrance interview session before
the loan proceeds will be disbursed to your Bursar account. |
Amount
Eligible students may borrow up to the following annual
loan limits. Aggregate Limits: Total undergraduate:
$23,000 for a dependent undergraduate, $46,000 for an
independent undergraduate (and certain dependent students).
Total undergraduate and graduate combined limit: $138,500.
Loan proceeds are disbursed twice during the year and
made co-payable to the student and college. Borrowers
are charged an origination fee which is deducted from
the loan proceeds. |
Repayment
Repayment begins six months after the student ceases half-time
enrollment (6 credits per semester) and may extend up
to 10 years. Loans have a variable interest rate and are
adjusted each year on July 1 with a cap of 8.25 percent.
There is no interest accrual while the student is in college
half-time for subsidized loans. Repayment of interest
is required for unsubsidized loans while the student
is in school or the interest may be capitalized. |

Criteria
Parents of dependent
matriculated students enrolled at least half-time may
participate. Students must maintain satisfactory academic
progress. |
Application
Direct PLUS applications are generated by the C.W. Post
Financial Assistance Office before forwarding to the parent
for completion. Loan proceeds are made co-payable to the
parent and the school and are disbursed to the school. |
Amount
Loans may not exceed the cost of attendance less financial
aid. Parents who have no adverse credit history as determined
by the federal loan servicer may be eligible. The loan
interest rate is variable and is adjusted each year on
July 1 with a cap of 9%. There is no aggregate loan limit.
Borrowers are charged an origination fee and insurance
fee which are deducted from the loan proceeds before disbursement. |
Repayment
Repayment of PLUS loans begins 60 days after the loan
is disbursed and may take up to 10 years to repay. |

GRADUATE STUDENT GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS
AND FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Jacob
K. Javits Fellowships |
|
Criteria
Graduate students in the arts, humanities and social
sciences. Applicants should be of superior academic
ability. Fellows are selected on the basis of demonstrated
achievement and exceptional promise. In addition, applicants
must:
- be a national of the U.S., or reside
in the U.S. and intend to become a permanent resident,
or be a permanent resident of the Trust Territory
of the Pacific Islands or the Northern Mariana Islands;
- devote full-time effort to the program
for which the fellowship is awarded; and
- maintain satisfactory academic progress.
The U.S. Education Department makes awards in conjunction
with the criteria by the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship
Board.

Application
Applications must be submitted to the U.S. Education Department
by the deadline published annually in the Federal Register,
usually in February of the award year. Applications should
include information about scholarly honors and awards,
narratives describing personal goals and references. Fellows
must maintain satisfactory progress and devote themselves
to full-time status in the fellowship program. |
Amount
One-year stipends are determined in accordance with the
fellow's demonstrated level of need. Awards range from
$5,000 to $16,000. Requests for continuation of support
are handled on an annual basis. Financial support is awarded
for a maximum of 48 months. |

| Bureau
of Indian Affairs Aid to Native Americans (BIA) |
Criteria
To be eligible, the applicant must be an enrolled member
of an American Indian, Eskimo or Aleut tribe, band or
group recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and demonstrate
financial need. Depending on availability of funds, grants
are made to undergraduate/graduate students. |
Application/Undergrad
Application forms may be obtained from and submitted to
the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Building, Room 523,
100 South Clinton Street, Syracuse, NY 13260-0043, (315)
448-0620. Applicants enrolled with the St. Regis Mohawk
Tribe and the Seneca Nation of Indians can mail their
applications directly to their respective tribes. An application
is necessary for each year of study. Application deadlines
are strictly adhered to. They are July 1 for the Fall
semester, October 15 for the Spring semester and May 15
for the Summer semester. St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Deadline
Date - June1. An official needs analysis from the College
Enrollment Services is required each year. First time
applicants must obtain a tribal enrollment certification
from the enrollment clerk which records enrollment for
the tribe. |

GRADUATE STUDENT GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS
AND FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH NEW YORK STATE
Christa
McAuliffe Fellowships |
Criteria
Full-time public and private school teachers who are citizens
or permanent residents of New York State and who also
teach in this state are eligible to apply for fellowships.
A teacher may receive a fellowship for a period of up
to 12 months and may not receive one for any two consecutive
years. A fellowship recipient must return to a teaching
position in his or her local educational agency, private
school or private school system for at least two years
following the completion of the fellowship. |
Application
Applications may be obtained from superintendents of schools,
heads of non-public schools, presidents of local school
district organizations, school personnel administrators,
the State Education Department or others and must be submitted
to the State Education Department's Office of Teaching,
Rm 5 North Albany, NY, 12234, (518) 474-6440. The deadline
for submitting applications depends on federal action
and varies from year to year. |
Amount
The number and size of awards are determined annually
by the Teacher Education, Certification and Practice Board
on the basis of federal allocations and numbers. |
