Accelerated B.S./M.S. in Nutrition

This program is particularly suitable for students who have a baccalaureate degree in another major and have chosen to continue their studies in the field of nutrition. Many students from other majors have chosen to become Registered Dietitians, and this goal can be met in the combined B.S./M.S. program.

The Bachelor of Science program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association and is a science-oriented liberal arts foundation for understanding nutrition. Courses in the major include the study of food science, normal nutrition, nutrition during the life cycle, community nutrition, food service management, and medical nutrition therapy. In the B.S./M.S. program, four graduate courses are substituted for upper level undergraduate courses. The M.S. program provides the opportunity for advanced study in nutrition, and students can specialize in one of four areas: Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition and Exercise, Eating Disorders, or Geriatric Nutrition. A core includes nutrition science, communications/counseling, biostatistics, research methods, and a library research paper or a research study. Electives enable the student to pursue individual interests. The requirements for entry to the Dietetic Internship can be completed during this program.  Upon completion of appropriate coursework (see following Table), the student is issued an American Dietetic Association Verification Statement and may apply to the Dietetic Internship. Upon completion of the Dietetic Internship, a student is eligible to take the national examination to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). Graduate credits from the C.W. Post Dietetic Internship are applied to the M.S. degree.

Admission to the B.S./M.S. program:

Incoming freshman students, current students at the C.W. Post Campus or transfer students from other institutions should seek advice from the Director of the Graduate Program when considering applying to this program.

Applicants who have completed a previous baccalaureate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 will be accepted to the program. Transcripts will be evaluated by the Academic Advisor to determine transfer credits. For this program, applicants should complete a C.W. Post undergraduate application admission code is NTA.

Verification Statement

Baccalaureate students receive an American Dietetic Association Verification Statement upon graduation, and thus meet the qualifications for entry to a Dietetic Internship. These requirements will continue to be met in the accelerated B.S./M.S. program, as indicated by the following list of courses and substitutions. Upon completion of these courses, B.S./M.S. students will also receive a Verification Statement for entry to a Dietetic Internship.
