New Faculty Profiles

Jerrilynn D. Burrowes
Jerrilynn D. Burrowes, Ph.D., RD, CDN
I joined the faculty in the C.W. Post Department of Nutrition in January 2003.

I received a B.S. degree in Pre-Medicine and Biology from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, a M.S. degree in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from New York University, and a Ph.D. from New York University in Nutrition and Dietetics and am a Registered Dietitian and Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist.

I worked in the areas of community nutrition, clinical nutrition (e.g., geriatrics, diabetes, and renal), and research. Prior to my faculty appointment at C.W. Post, I worked in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City for twelve years. The majority of those years were spent as the Research Coordinator for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) multi-center clinical trial investigating the effects of dialysis dose and membrane flux on outcome in people receiving maintenance hemodialysis.

I have authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international professional conferences on the topic of nutrition assessment and management of people with chronic kidney disease. Also I coauthored a chapter on “Adherence to Diet Therapy” which will be published later this year in the 2nd edition of Nutritional Management of Renal Disease.

I have held several leadership positions at the national and local levels of the National Kidney Foundation Council on Renal Nutrition. As a member of the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF-K/DOQI) Nutrition Work Group I developed clinical practice guidelines for the nutritional management of people with chronic kidney disease. In my role as a member of the NKF-K/DOQI Advisory Board I participate in overseeing the development of clinical practice guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and bone disease in people with chronic kidney disease. Recently, I received a grant from Renal Research Institute in New York City to study the implementation of the NKF-K/DOQI nutrition guidelines by renal dietitians in the United States. Results of this study are expected later this year.

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition, I am teaching Medical Nutrition Therapy and Research Methodology to undergraduate students, and supervising graduate research projects. I will be developing a new course for graduate students in the fall on nutrition and kidney disease.

A native New Yorker and a proud one, at that, I enjoy cultural events such as opera, theatre, and museums, and also sporting events, cooking, traveling, playing paddleball, speed walking, as well as watching professional football. I have one son, Cedric, who is an aspiring actor.

Lenore Abend
Lenore Abend, Ph.D., RN
My career began in 1969 when I earned my nursing diploma from the Jewish Hospital & Medical Center School of Nursing. In 1973 I completed my first bachelor's degree in psychology from Brooklyn College. My second bachelor's degree is in Nursing from Adelphi University. I returned to Adelphi and earned my master's degree in Psychiatric Nursing in 1979. I took a semester off from school but I returned in the fall of 1980 to Hofstra University where I earned my Ph.D. in Education Research in 1984.

My first position upon graduation was at Maimonides Medical Center as a staff nurse on the pediatric unit of the hospital. I left there to take a position as the head nurse on the Pediatric Psychiatric Unit at New York. State Psychiatric Institute. My teaching career started in 1972 when I was asked to return to the Jewish Hospital & Medical Center School of Nursing to develop and teach its psychiatric nursing course. I left the School of Nursing for an academic appointment at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus where I taught for 9 years. My next position took me to the City University of New York, York College Campus where I taught for 16 years. I am pleased to be back at Long Island University at the C.W. Post Campus and look forward to a long stay.

I have continued to practice part time in the clinical area. My positions include supportive case management for psychiatric patients, home care for psychiatric as well as medical-surgical patients, and private practice in psychotherapy. I have given workshops in area hospitals and have participated in many programs as a panelist on topics such as multiculturalism and non-violent crisis intervention.
