Jerrilynn D. Burrowes, Ph.D., RD, CDN
I joined the faculty in the C.W. Post Department of Nutrition
in January 2003.
I received a B.S. degree in Pre-Medicine and Biology from
Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, a M.S. degree in
Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from New York University, and
a Ph.D. from New York University in Nutrition and Dietetics
and am a Registered Dietitian and Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist.
I worked in the areas of community nutrition, clinical nutrition
(e.g., geriatrics, diabetes, and renal), and research. Prior
to my faculty appointment at C.W. Post, I worked in the Department
of Nephrology and Hypertension at Beth Israel Medical Center
in New York City for twelve years. The majority of those years
were spent as the Research Coordinator for a National Institutes
of Health (NIH) multi-center clinical trial investigating
the effects of dialysis dose and membrane flux on outcome
in people receiving maintenance hemodialysis.
I have authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals
and presented at national and international professional conferences
on the topic of nutrition assessment and management of people
with chronic kidney disease. Also I coauthored a chapter on
Adherence to Diet Therapy which will be published
later this year in the 2nd edition of Nutritional Management
of Renal Disease.
I have held several leadership positions at the national
and local levels of the National Kidney Foundation Council
on Renal Nutrition. As a member of the National Kidney Foundation
Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF-K/DOQI) Nutrition
Work Group I developed clinical practice guidelines for the
nutritional management of people with chronic kidney disease.
In my role as a member of the NKF-K/DOQI Advisory Board I
participate in overseeing the development of clinical practice
guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia, hypertension,
cardiovascular disease, and bone disease in people with chronic
kidney disease. Recently, I received a grant from Renal Research
Institute in New York City to study the implementation of
the NKF-K/DOQI nutrition guidelines by renal dietitians in
the United States. Results of this study are expected later
this year.
As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition,
I am teaching Medical Nutrition Therapy and Research Methodology
to undergraduate students, and supervising graduate research
projects. I will be developing a new course for graduate students
in the fall on nutrition and kidney disease.
A native New Yorker and a proud one, at that, I enjoy cultural
events such as opera, theatre, and museums, and also sporting
events, cooking, traveling, playing paddleball, speed walking,
as well as watching professional football. I have one son,
Cedric, who is an aspiring actor.
