Long Island University is, first and foremost, a teaching institution.
We are here to guide our students to explore the world and themselves
in the tradition of the arts and sciences and with a clear focus
on the requirements of the modern workplace. Our programs in the
C.W. Post School of Health Professions and Nursing embody these
goals and commitments.
The American Health Care Delivery System is continually in flux
with radical changes in technology and health care policy as well
as insurance coverage programs and practices. Health care professionals
must be prepared not only to react to, but to anticipate, change
and create new opportunities for effective medical treatment. The
theories and practices that apply today will fast become outdated
and individual professional responsibilities will require broad
intellectual skills and a keen mind. In this context, our responsibility
is to provide students with both the knowledge and skills necessary
for entry into healthcare professions but with both the knowledge
and skills necessary to support the life-long process of learning
itself.
Perhaps even more important, we see participation in the world
of health care as a noble calling based upon the recognition of
the dignity and sanctity of all human beings. There is no health
care without caring. As we teach, we hope to keep alive
and to nourish this fundamental insight so that each person you
encounter is given the kindness and consideration we could hope
for our families and ourselves. Our mission as teachers requires
that we do no less.
