Thoughts from the University Director of Government Relations

Christopher A. Williams

From the perspective of the local, state and federal governments, this is an exciting time to be involved in nursing and the health professions. The Congress and state legislatures are trying to keep pace with the rapidly advancing technologies and changing missions of the industry.

For example, the US Senate recently took a major step forward in supporting the Nurse Reinvestment Act when they accepted an amendment to increase FY 2004 funding for nurse education and recruitment by $50 million.

Although lobbying groups and advocacy organizations effectively communicate with legislators and their staffs, YOU are the most important link in ensuring that the industry is represented.

As an educator, a health care professional, a nurse or a student studying in the field, your personal efforts to advocate on behalf of your profession are carefully considered by legislators, especially those who represent your school and home districts. Your professional opinions and concerns are those that lawmakers can cite when debating the issues. Legislators need experts in the health professions and nursing to guide them through the complex maze of government regulation, to explain the latest advances in health care technology, to provide insight into the best patient care practices and to help them understand the rising costs associated with health care and insurance coverage.

For over 75 years, Long Island University has provided our local, state and federal lawmakers with the knowledge they need to ensure our government can act to protect the health and safety of our neighbors. I challenge YOU to continue that tradition of excellence.
