What is Chat?
Chat is a reference service that enables patrons to ask questions about
research, library resources, and library services and policies through LivePerson,
a real-time instant messaging service, during selected hours.
Do I need special software to use the service?
No extra software is needed on your machine for you to use the service. Simply
click the Live Help button that you will find on the Chat
web page, or any other University Library web page on which it is available,
to access the service. If the chat service is unavailable you will be
prompted to send your question via e-mail.
Who can use the service?
The primary goal of this service is to provide assistance to Long Island
University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others affiliated with the
University. Patrons unaffiliated with the University will be assisted with
questions related to government documents or about Long Island University and
its unique collections. However, unaffiliated patrons with questions that can
be answered at their own local public or university library may be referred
to such organizations.
For what kinds of uses is the service best suited?
What kinds of questions are inappropriate for the service?
Extensive research questions are beyond the scope of this service. If you
have such a question, we invite you to visit us during library hours.
Detailed directions
are available on the campus web site. If you need to request a book or
article through interlibrary loan, contact Interlibrary Loan Services at
516-299-2898. If your question concerns checkouts, renewals, holds, or fines
contact the Circulation Desk at 516-299-2303.
Who answers the questions?
Questions are answered by Reference Librarians from the B. Davis Schwartz
Memorial Library on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
What if I can't get through or no one answers?
If a librarian is unavailable, you always have the option of phoning the
Reference Desk at 516-299-2305, 2306 or 2832 during library hours, or
asking your question via e-mail.
Why do you need my name and institutional affiliation?
Certain information is needed to serve you most efficiently. Your name is
helpful for us to identify you, but you may use any name you choose. Many
resources are available off-site only to individuals affiliated with Long
Island University. Knowing your University affiliation, if any, will help us
to direct you to resources that will best serve your needs.
