This two volume set is an excellent source for finding information on small business. Volume One profiles 194 specific small businesses, listing sources of start-up information, reference works, statistical sources, professional associations, trade periodicals, trade shows, etc. Volume Two provides sources of information on such general small business topics as accounting, business plans, credit, insurance, wholesaling, etc. Also provided is a good listing of state programs.

This is a very practical, step-by-step guide to handling the business side of your small business. The guide will show you how to keep your books, raise capital, establish a partnership, and do your taxes.

An independent federal agency whose mission is to help Americans start, build and grow businesses. Good resource for help with developing a business plan and identifying statistical sources of information.
 
Your Own Business: A Young Entrepreneur's Start-Up Guide. James Freeley and John Matthews. (Bus. HD 2346)
Very similar to Are You An Entrepreneur? by the same author, this book explores the basics of starting a business. Structure of U.S. business, entrepreneurial characteristics, developing a business plan, and new business ideas are some of the topics discussed.

This is North America's professional alliance of angel groups. The Association's Directory may be used to identify direct investors in entrepreneurial companies.

Often difficult to find information, this directory provides financial statement data on small business. The data is arranged by type of business and asset size. This is a good source to use to find financial ratios for small business enterprises.
 
Pratt's Guide to Venture Capital Sources. (Bus. HG 65 .G83)
This book is a comprehensive collection of articles written by professional venture investors, and a directory that profiles venture capital companies by state. This will be a very useful source for those seeking a general understanding of the venture capital industry as well as specific sources of venture capital funding. A subject index to venture capital firms is provided.

Financial statement ratios, common-size balance sheet and income statement line items arrayed by asset and sales size, as well as five years of trend data.

These databases will provide many full-text articles about all business topics and will be especially useful for finding current small business information.

ABI/Inform Global (ProQuest)
The ProQuest databases provide a wealth of information in full-text articles. Use the Advanced Search to locate articles by specific company and/or subject heading.
 
Business & Company Resource Center
Use this database to find many current, full-text articles on a specific topic. The Advanced Search feature is useful for locating targeted data such as company and industry information, investment reports, company history, and rankings.
 
Business Source Premier (Ebsco)
Business Source Premier provides full text articles for over 8,000 scholarly business journals and other sources, including full text for more than 1,100 scholarly business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.
 
Conference Board
The world's most widely-quoted business network, it publishes research on a broad range of management issues, most of which are surveys of actual corporate practice. The organization also publishes domestic and international economic data.
 
General BusinessFile ASAP
Produced by the same company as the Business & Company Resource Center, this database provides similar information in a somewhat different format.
 
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
This all full-text database provides many current and retrospective news and business articles.
