Oxford Art Online
Oxford Art Online is an extensive art
encyclopedia. It contains more than 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies
of artists, and 500,000 bibliographic citations, as well as timelines of art history
and thematic guides.
This full-text database was created through partnerships with major museums
including the MMA and MoMA. It also features over 5,000 art images and 40,000
image links.
The website combines: Grove Art Online, Oxford Companion to
Western Art, Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and The Concise
Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.
Use Oxford Art Online to search for:
- biographical information on an artist
- information on an art movement or time period in art history
- art images
- ideas for art research papers
How to get to Oxford Art Online
At the Library homepage, click on Online Databases.
Then select Art from the
Subject List of Databases.
Scroll down to find Oxford Art Online under
Online Encyclopedias and Books.
Or just click O in the
Alphabetic List of Databases.
* Please note: Oxford Art Online can only be accessed
on campus.
Searching Oxford Art Online
Search by keyword, or choose Advanced Search to limit your
search to articles, biographies, images or bibliographies.
You may also search or browse alphabetical lists of
ALL CONTENT, BIOGRAPHIES,
SUBJECTS, IMAGES, or
TOOLS & RESOURCES
(Timelines of World Art & Thematic Guides), by using the toolbar on the top of the page.
- For a printer friendly version, click Print on the right of the screen above
the article.
- To email articles and images, click Email just above the article window.
- To get citations for articles and images, click Cite, and select a citation
format. Then copy and paste the citation into your list of references or bibliography.
