Two new librarian-created sites can be reached through the
Subject Directories category
of the VRC:
Infomine: Scholarly Internet Resources Collections,
from the University of California, has links to many
databases and resources covering categories from Electronic
Journals to Visual and Performing Arts, and
Librarians' Index to the Internet from the California State
Library offers topics such as World Cultures,
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Media, Ancient and Medieval History,
Current Events, etc.
Remember, for style manuals, such as APA, MLA, and now AMA and more, you
can click on the Cite It! link, near the bottom of the left column
on our homepage. Robert Delaney's Citation Style is receiving
great praise from libraries and universities throughout
the country and the world. We should be proud of his work. Researchers
particularly favor the color-coding.
Purchase Textbooks Online is a new link from our homepage
which allows students to access the Campus Bookstore
and other online vendors. Check it out.
Dell Premier Pages: Dell is offering reduced computer package
prices to LIU personnel. From the LIU homepage,
click on C.W. Post Information Technology for the Dell link.
Literary Links
If you need to locate a poem, Poem Finder offers full-text of 50,000 poems,
and cites anthologies and bibliographic references for an additional half
million poems. You can search by author, title, subject,
textword, and first and last lines. A Subject Navigator allows you to select
topics within broad subject areas.
It also features "The Year's Best Poetry", as well as brief biographical
information on the authors. To reach Poem Finder, use the alphabetical
database listing on our Homepage.
New Databases
Accunet/AP Photo Archive was on trial until November 15th and has been
purchased. Use it
from our homepage under the Alphabetic or
Subject Database lists. The
Photo Archive contains 500,000 of Associated Press's current and historical
images from the last 150 years. Search boxes give you a choice of
what, when and where, with a description of each photo included. Search
Tip: use single quotations for names
or for a text string, to search for words adjacent to each other, e.g. 'Bill Clinton' and 'White House'.
Click on Trial Databases for the latest ones being tested for purchase.

Campus Library homepage is now online and can be reached through our homepage.
LIUCAT Logic
Always check Show Copies, since books that are classified
as "Recall" and "Shelving Cart" may be in cataloging or
in the stacks. Shelving Cart usually means that a book has
been returned and is literally on a cart ready to be shelved.
Item Missing indicates that a book has been claimed to have been
returned by the patron but is still not on the shelves.
If location information indicates that a book is at another campus, it does
not always mean that we have no copy available here; the book may be
on Reserve. The system considers a reserve book to be not
available, and therefore shows any available circulating copies first,
no matter which campus. The only way to be sure is to check
Show Copies for full holdings information.
Always use General Keyword to locate a play within a collection;
e.g., The Jew of Venice
LIUCat on the Web (WebPac): Books that are checked out are
listed as Not Available on the web version of our
catalog. The due date does not display on this version.

Search Engine Update
Lycos now arranges its search results in
four categories: Popular, Web Sites, News Articles, and Shopping.
AltaVista has adopted a more attention-getting format. Its
homepage includes hot searches, breaking news,
preselected subject areas, stock quotes, and shopping links. You can
restrict your search to The Web, News, Discussion Groups, or Products.
To get answers to questions phrased in natural language, you can now
go directly to Ask Jeeves at www.ask.com
as well as through AltaVista.
Interlibrary Loan
When requesting a publication on interlibrary loan,
please include a complete citation to the publication,
as well as the source where you found out about it. When citing a
database as the source, please give
both the name of the database and the accession number
corresponding to the publication you want.
Most requests come from non-LIU libraries, and
we must adhere to their due dates and conditions.
Instruction
Individualized or small group instruction is always
available in Reference on the use of databases and
the Internet. Appointments may be needed. Hopefully the BI room will be
fully operational soon.
Quirky Queries
We often get intriguing reference questions. A few examples follow:
- A library science student asked if the biographical
source, Dictionary of American Biography (DAB),
dealt only with those people who were dead and buried. The answer was yes. The new American
National Biography (ANB) includes people who died before 1996. The Encyclopedia of World
Biography has sketches on characters from fictional works, and indexes authors by genre, etc.
- A student wanted to verify a quotation: "Give them an inch and they'll take a _____".
Choices are: a) yard, b) mile, c) ell
- A professor needed to know which databases to use for information on sports and children.
A Terms in Database Search in WebSPIRS revealed that all databases had information, even
MLA and Philosopher's Index!!!
Odds and Ends
The Vertical File has been weeded extensively and updated.
We have pamphlets of interest on many topics.
Graduate bulletins are no longer being maintained by
Reference. For information regarding graduate programs,
visit the Virtual Reference Collection on our homepage,
and click on Education for links to Peterson's Guides.
Tea Time: We've begun a weekly chat session as a
means of networking, sharing department news, discussing
professional issues, etc. The sessions were well-received
and we plan to continue them.
