Social Work Students Honor Professionals from Their Field
Members of the Master of Social Work Graduate Student Association, C.W. Post Campus Chapter, went on the road in March 2005, visiting Long Island social service agencies in observance of Social Work Appreciation Month. Social work club members dropped in on the Family and Children’s Association, the Hispanic Counseling Center and the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. They gave out goodie bags of pins, pens, post-it notes and other handy items to show their appreciation for social workers.

Lindsay Lohan’s Mom-Manager Gives Students an Inside Perspective on Celebrity Management
Star Power! Nothing competes with lessons from real life. Recently, students in one of C.W. Post Professor Patrizia Porrini’s management classes heard the real deal from former Radio City Rockette Dina Lohan, who now serves as manager for her megastar daughter, Lindsay Lohan. Dina Lohan launched her daughter’s career with modeling and commercial gigs, and then secured the “big break” with a successful audition for the lead role in “The Parent Trap” (1998). Her daughter has since appeared in several feature films including “Freaky Friday” (2003) and “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” (2004) and most recently, “Mean Girls” (2004).
Ms. Lohan’s April 19, 2005 visit to the C.W. Post Campus was arranged by C.W. Post student Alexis Armonas, a business management major who is also an assistant to the movie star.
“Dina Lohan is absolutely inspirational,” Armonas says. “She has so much to offer in the way of business management advice.”
Lohan talked candidly with students, answering many questions about life in the entertainment management business.

C.W. Post Responds to Shortage with Blood Drive October 19
September 27, 2005 - Did you know that the New York metropolitan area has to import approximately 50,000 pints of blood each year from other parts of the country because local residents don’t donate enough blood to meet our own needs? In fact, Long Island (and the entire New York metropolitan area) is chronically short of blood because less than 2% of the local population donates each year. The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is hoping to reverse this trend.
The C.W. Post Campus, located at 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville, will host a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 in the Pioneer Room of Hillwood Commons. The blood drive is open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
“The catastrophic event of Hurricane Katrina should serve as a reminder to us to always be prepared in the face of an emergency,” said Joseph Shenker, Provost of the C.W. Post Campus. “But we must remain especially diligent for the needs of people who face personal crises every day – such as cancer patients, accident victims and people needing surgery, who require a continuous, sufficient blood supply.” More local donors are needed to donate blood on a regular basis because it’s the blood already on the shelves that is immediately used to save lives – both in the hours following a crisis and each and every day,” Dr. Shenker added.
Donors must be between the ages of 17 and 75 (over 75 with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health. Donors will be required to show ID and need to know their Social Security number.
This year’s raffle prizes include 10 iPods, Subway sandwich coupons, T-shirts, and two $250 Commerce Bank accounts.
Faculty, staff and students can make an appointment to donate by contacting: Tara McCarthy in the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development at ext. 2800 or tara.mccarthy@liu.edu. Appointment is suggested, but walk-ins are welcome upon availability. For medical information on blood donation, call 1-800-688-0900.
Vytra Health Plans Sponsors C.W. Post Access and Excellence Challenge
September 30, 2005 – Freshmen at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville can win great prizes for earning good grades, participating in campus events and making wise health choices in the Access and Excellence Challenge, sponsored this year by Vytra Health Plans.
The A&E Challenge encourages first-year students to become involved in the Campus community, improve their health and succeed in their studies. Each College 101 class is considered an A&E Challenge team, and each member of the team that earns the most points – by attending campus events, working out at the Campus’ Pratt Recreation Center and earning the highest grade point average – wins a prize package. Each member of the champion team is eligible to participate in a drawing for four grand prizes. Last year's grand prizes were a television set, a laptop computer, a DVD player and a stereo.
Events that carry attendance points include the Homecoming Weekend Pep Rally, a tennis clinic, a food drive, a comedy night, an alcohol awareness program, and more.
“We are pleased to support this innovative program that encourages students to appreciate healthy living and community awareness,” said Dr. Lonnie Divack, Senior Medical Director of Vytra Health Plans.
“We thank Vytra for making the Access and Excellence Challenge possible,” said Dr. Joseph Shenker, Provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. “It truly benefits first-year students and the C.W. Post Campus community in many important ways.”
Also included as part of Vytra’s sponsorship are a series of wellness and fitness events, such as Yoga, a nutrition lecture, Pilates and an introductory cardio class for students and faculty as well as Vytra members.
Vytra Health Plans is a Long Island-based health plan providing personalized health care coverage and third-party administrative services to more than 175,000 members in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens Counties. The Access and Excellence Challenge is a program of the Division of Student Affairs at C.W. Post.

October 14, 2005 - Currency comes in many colors, but the students in the C.W. Post chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) National Honor Society are seeing bronze. With 25 new members inducted into their group last year, they were given the FMA Bronze National Honor Society Membership Development Award for 2004-05, a prize bestowed on only 5% of all FMA chapters around the world.
“This is a great honor for our organization,” said Zhaohui Zhang, Ph.D., faculty adviser to the club and Assistant Professor of Finance in the College of Management at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. “This award recognizes the hard work of our students and the academic standards they hold themselves to.” Dr. Zhang added that the honor also acknowledges the initiative of College of Management alumna Michelle Lopez ’05, the chapter’s former vice president and the involvement of Andrea Newman, an M.B.A. student, who is the chapter’s current president.
