July 27, 2001 Not only has the C.W. Post Chamber Music
Festival grown from approximately 40 participants in
1981 to more than 100 participants today but the musicians
who have attended have grown as well. For violinist Vivian
Kim, who first attended the festival in 1988 as a teenager,
the training she received and a chance meeting at a
subsequent festival 12 years later led her to develop
a professional string quartet. Vivian met violinist Hisaichi
Shimura when they both attended the 2000 Chamber Music Festival
and the pair teamed up with violinist Tom Rosenthal and cellist
Grace Wu to form The Metro Musicians. The group, which freelances
on Long Island and in New York City, is participating in the
current festival (July 16-Aug. 3) both as students and as
members of the Festival Chamber Orchestra.
Many such stories have arisen from the Chamber Music
Festival. The program, modeled after summer programs at the
Tanglewood Music Center and the Aspen Music Festival, has
"raised" many families of musicians. Participants
in the 20th anniversary season currently
under way include a mother-daughter flutist duo and
8 sets of siblings. Top professional musicians from the New
York area will coach the participants and all will participate
in culminating public concerts.
The three-week festival, featuring the Pierrot Consort, C.W.
Posts faculty ensemble-in-residence, focuses on the
study and performance of the standard chamber music repertoire.
The seminar consists of master classes in violin, viola, cello,
piano, flute, woodwinds and guitar, concerts, a concerto competition,
formation of chamber ensembles and orchestras, and a conducting
program. Participants, who range from 12 years old to working
professionals, are selected by audition.
The final week of the 2001 season consists of an intense
series of concerts (see attached) with the culminating gala
on the final day, Friday August 3. The gala will feature performances
by all participants and faculty and will be attended by many
festival alumni, some of whom will perform as well.
The Festival is held on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University at 720 Northern Blvd. (Route 25A) in Brookville.
