C.W. Post Bioethics Conference
to Address Ethical Issues on October 24 at Tilles Center

 
August 24, 2001 — Three of the country's most distinguished experts on bioethics will address the 4th annual Bioethics Conference at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY. On Wednesday, October 24, 2001, The Long Island Center for Ethics will provide an opportunity for reflection about the many challenging questions facing society concerning the fair allocation of health care and medical resources. The conference, "Justice in Health Care," will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Tilles Center on the C.W. Post Campus.

Speakers will include:

Greg Koski, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Federal Office for Human Research Protections, who will discuss the role of Federal research initiatives designed to improve access and eliminate health disparities experienced by sexual, racial and ethnic minorities

Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D., M.A.C. P., the John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center, and the former director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, who will consider the requirements for the health care of the community and the role of managed care in a just system of care;

Patricia H. Werhane, Ph.D., the Ruffin Professor of Business Ethics and Senior Fellow at the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia, who will clarify how justice relates to organizational ethics and compliance standards.

The event is designed to help physicians, nurses, social workers, administrators, managed-care providers, board members of organizations involved in health care, clinical and institutional review board ethics committee members, and researchers understand how to achieve the ethical goals of justice.

Registration is $45 on or before Oct 8; $55 after Oct 8. The fee includes tuition, continental breakfast, refreshment break, and parking. Space is limited and early registration is advised.

Conference sponsors include Catholic Health Systems, North Shore —Long Island Jewish Health System, and the John P. McGrath Fund of Long Island University.

The Long Island Center for Ethics is an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to fostering the study of applied and professional ethics. It sponsors seminars and workshops led by experts and scholars, and is a forum where Long Islanders — from students to corporate leaders — can tackle ethical issues in a variety of arenas. The Center is based within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the C.W. Post Campus.
