| September 6, 2001 To meet the demands for trained professionals
with complementary expertise in computer technology and information
management, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in
Brookville, New York is launching a new school of study this
September called the College of Information and Computer
Science.
This new college will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees
in computer science, library and information science, information
transfer, information systems, and management engineering.
Students will have the unique advantage of combining the technical
aspect of computer science and information technology (such
as programming and software development) with both the humanistic
side of information access (human/computer interaction, information
retrieval, Internet access, libraries and information services),
and with content orientation (digital libraries, information
architecture for the internet, corporate databases and other
resources), according to Dr. Michael Koenig, the new dean
of the College of Information and Computer Science.
The College of Information and Computer Science will house
two of C.W. Post's already established divisions: The Palmer
School of Library and Information Science and the Department
of Computer Science/Management Engineering.
The Palmer School, founded in 1959, is nationally
recognized for its American Library Association-accredited
Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (a distinction
shared by only 55 schools in the country), and for its Ph.D.
in Information Studies, the only one of its kind in the New
York metropolitan area. The School's B.S. in Information Transfer,
which recognizes the need for an information literate workforce,
is one of a new breed of programs that combine information
technology, content and delivery.
The Department of Computer Science/Management Engineering
has offered cutting-edge computer technology programs for
more than four decades, and awards Long Island's only Master's
Degree in Information Systems. The Management Engineering
component offers an intensive program in technical project
management. The Department's enrollment has risen dramatically,
almost tripling in the past several years.
By combining two divisions of study under one umbrella, students
will benefit from a wider range of diverse course offerings;
team-teaching opportunities by Palmer School and Computer
Science/Management Engineering faculty, and educational training
in emerging areas such as digital libraries, information architecture,
knowledge management, and enterprise content management. Faculty
will conduct joint research projects, which will be used in
classroom teaching.
More than 25 full-time faculty members in addition
to a staff of adjunct professors who are expert practitioners
in their fields will teach in the College of Information
and Computer Science.
"Increasingly, society, and in particular the business
community, recognize that information access and computer
technology go hand-in-hand in today's marketplace," said
Dr. Koenig. "The new College of Information and Computer
Science has united these disciplines under one roof to offer
our students enriched learning opportunities in some of the
world's fastest growing fields as well as a specially designed
curricula that fosters new ideas and fresh perspectives."
Dr. Michael Koenig will serve as dean of both the College
of Information and Computer Science and the Palmer School
of Library and Information Science. Dr. Koenig is an experienced
educator, corporate executive, and information systems designer
who has been with C.W. Post since 1999. He is a past president
of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics.
The Department of Computer Science/Management Engineering
will be chaired by Dr. Susan Fife-Dorchak, a published researcher
and expert in systems design and object oriented analysis
who has been with the campus for 20 years.
