New Advanced Certificate in "Nonprofit Management"

September 13, 2001 -- The College of Management at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY now offers a new Nonprofit Management Advanced Certificate Program. Designed for students who already have a bachelor's degree, the program covers such subjects as grant writing and managing a nonprofit organization. The certificate requires students to complete five courses (15 credits).

In addition to offering the certificate, the College of Management allows students studying for a Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) or an M.P.A. in Health Care Administration to specialize in Nonprofit Management.

"I think the climate is changing in human and social services, and what worked in the past will not sustain today's manager," said Dr. Elissa D. Giffords, an assistant professor with the Social Work program in the Department of Healthcare and Public Administration at C.W. Post. "There used to be generous funding and that's not true today. Managers of nonprofit agencies have to learn how to adapt their agencies to this changing fiscal environment. "

According to Dr. Joyce Roll, chairman of the department's curriculum committee, which developed the program, "An important part of the nonprofit program focuses on practical, hands-on management techniques for improving staff and organizational performance, which have proven successful in the private sector. It was designed to bring the best of management science to nonprofit organizations, from hospitals and government agencies to social services such as mental health and drug treatment centers. The program is perfect for people with social work or other clinical backgrounds who are already managers or administrators in nonprofit organizations. These folks used to learn management by trial and error on the job. This program provides them with the same management tools used in successful corporations, which is what they need to perform effectively in today's nonprofit environment."

The Nonprofit Management Program is offered through C.W. Post's College of Management. The College of Management prepares students for leadership positions in accounting, business, government, public and health care facilities and criminal justice systems. Comprising three outstanding schools School of Business, School of Professional Accountancy, and School of Public Service the College prepares students to perform competently, ethically and professionally in the public and private sectors. The College of Management's business degree programs are accredited by AACSB International.
