Donated Cellular Phones
Provide a Lifeline to Victims of Abuse

June 21, 2001 - Students at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University have collected dozens of used cell phones to be distributed to victims of domestic violence. The cell phones are reprogrammed to dial 911 and provide a vital lifeline - anywhere and anytime - to victims of physical abuse.

The C.W. Post project was spearheaded by Kathi Yanatos, assistant dean of the School of Health Professions and clinical coordinator of the Radiologic Technology program. Kathi became aware of the national effort sponsored by the Wireless Foundation and National Coalition Against Domestic Violence when the initiative was featured on a morning news program. As advisor of the Medical Imaging Society, she introduced the idea to its members (students studying Radiologic Technology), who embraced the concept and have collected more than 75 phones to date. The effort is ongoing, and the group has made three shipments to the Wireless Foundation, which has collected and distributed about 30,000 cell phones.
