Palmer School Graduates Celebrate Another Year of Near-Perfect Employment Rates and a Healthy Increase in Starting Salaries

July 20, 2001 — For the sixth year in a row, graduates of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science based at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University are celebrating a near perfect employment rate.

According to Mary Westermann-Cicio, Assistant Dean of the Palmer School, a recent survey of graduates revealed nearly all of the 2000 graduates are fully employed, with only two of the 53 respondents actively searching for a higher-level professional position. The average starting salary for the 2000 graduates who earned degrees in library science was $41,483 — a 7.3% increase over the last year — with the typical time from graduation to professional employment being less than 60 days. Graduates landed jobs in the following sectors:

  • Public Libraries 35%
  • School Media Centers 31%
  • Academic Libraries 15%
  • Special Libraries 10%
  • Other (Information industry, archives, etc.) 9%

Most graduates (95%) took employment in New York State, with the remaining graduates employed in the New England Area or as distant as Minnesota.

The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates information and library science and is accredited by the American Library Association. The School also offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D. in Information Studies, and a certificate program in Archives and Records Management. The master's degree is also offered in Manhattan at NYU's Bobst Library and select master's degree and certificate courses are offered at the Palmer School’s Westchester campus, located at Pace University in Pleasantville.
