July 15, 2002 -- Long Island University, the eighth-largest private
university in the nation, has named Jeffrey Kane of Roslyn, NY,
vice president for academic affairs. In this capacity, Dr. Kane
will oversee the Universitys academic operations and initiatives
across six campuses.
Dr. Kane served as acting vice president while a search was conducted
to fill the position. During that time, he helped invigorate the
Universitys academic programs, collaborating with the deans
at the campus level and redesigning the management of academic budgets
which total more than $110 million. In addition, Dr. Kane sought
funding to establish new educational initiatives and articulated
a clear academic vision for the institution. His exemplary leadership
led to his appointment over a strong field of national candidates.
"I am an educator, and I am extraordinarily pleased to have
the opportunity to actively participate in a university dedicated,
first and foremost, to its students. Long Island University is committed
to ensuring the quality of the human, personal and social dimensions
of higher education," Dr. Kane declared. "I am at home."
Dr. Kanes association with the University dates back to 1996,
when he became dean of the School of Education at the C. W. Post
Campus. During his tenure as head of one of the largest and most
comprehensive teacher education, counseling and administration programs
in New York State, he worked with the faculty to refine the Schools
mission, enhance its programs and build a sense of community. A
champion of child-centered education, Dr. Kane also played a key
role in the implementation of the "Comer" school reform
process, a nationally renowned collaboration between Yale University,
C.W. Post and the Westbury School District. This successful partnership
led to support from the Rockefeller and Verizon Foundations among
other leading foundations. Prior to his employment at the University,
Dr. Kane was a faculty member, a dean and an associate provost at
Adelphi University.
The new vice president remains an active and vocal scholar, writing
and publishing on the philosophy of knowledge and educational policy.
Among his many academic achievements, Dr. Kane authored "Beyond
Empiricism: Michael Polanyi Reconsidered" (Peter Lang) and
edited and contributed to "Education, Information and Transformation:
Essays on Learning and Thinking" (Prentice Hall). He has written
numerous articles and book chapters, and has served as editor of
the refereed quarterly, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social
Justice, for the past 10 years.
Dr. Kane holds a bachelors degree in education from Queens
College, a masters degree in early childhood/elementary education
from Adelphi University and a doctorate in philosophy of education
in the area of epistemology of science from New York University.
He and his wife, Janet, have three children, Gabriel, Emily and
Jesse.
