August 16, 2002 As the healthcare industry changes, so too
do the type of jobs available. The influx of bioscience industries
within Nassau and Suffolk counties has created a demand for graduates
with degrees in biomedical technology. As the Human Genome Project
identifies genes that cause defects, disease and abnormalities,
society needs individuals educated in molecular technology who can
apply their knowledge to the study and treatment of illnesses and
disorders. At the same time, MRI technology (Magnetic Resonance
Imaging), an important diagnostic tool, has also become quite advanced.
Technicians are in high demand, yet until now no formal educational
programs have been offered in the Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau or Suffolk
areas.
In response to these conditions, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University has established two new programs a bachelor of
science in biomedical technology and an MRI Certificate both
offered by the School of Health Professions and Nursing.
The new B.S. in Biomedical Technology degree program will prepare
students for a research career in biomedical science. Students will
learn state-of-the-art research techniques that they can use to
solve biomedical research problems in jobs with bioscience, pharmaceutical
or cosmetic organizations. Students may also take elective courses
that will satisfy the pre-requisites for entry into medical or dental
school.
The MRI certificate program is designed to prepare students for
the day-to-day practice of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a clinical
setting. The 18-credit program allows students to attend school
on a part-time basis, making it appropriate for working radiologic
technologists looking to expand their certification. Upon completion,
students will be prepared to take the American Registry of Radiologic
Technologists (A.R.R.T.) Advanced Registry exam in MRI.
The C.W. Post School of Health Professions and Nursing also offers
undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs in other
aspects of radiologic technology and biomedical sciences, as well
as in cytotechnology, health management systems, nursing and nutrition.
