| January 17, 2002 - Is your native tongue something other than English?
Do you wish you could improve your English language skills to communicate
better at work, with your children's teachers or your doctors, or
to get into an American college? Spoken language is the key to good
communication and can be a determining factor in getting an education,
securing a job, obtaining appropriate medical care or even getting
what you need when you're shopping.
The English Language Institute, part of the School of Continuing
Studies at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, is offering
two 10-week courses in English as a Second Language (ESL). Classes
begin February 5. The program is geared toward adults whose native
language is not English and will include programs for ESL speakers
of all levels - beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The course
will cover four main skill areas: conversation (listening and speaking),
grammar, reading and writing.
A 30-hour course will meet on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. at the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Blvd. (Route 25A) in
Brookville. Tuition is $170 plus a materials fee. A 40-hour course
is offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. at
either the C.W. Post Campus, or at Glen Cove High School, 150 Dosoris
Lane, Glen Cove. Tuition for this course is $225 plus a materials
fee.
In-person registration and placement interviews for the 30-
and 40-hour courses
will take place:
Tuesday, January 29 at 6 p.m. in the Adult Student Lounge
on the second floor of Hillwood Commons at the C.W. Post Campus,
and at Glen Cove High School.
Saturday, February 2 at 9:30 a.m. at the C.W. Post Campus,
in the Office of Continuing Studies, room 222 in the Administration
Building.
Students may register in advance, but must attend one of the placement
interviews listed above.
C.W. Post will also offer an intensive Summer Immersion Program
for ESL students beginning June 3. Classes will be held four days
a week, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the C.W. Post Campus. As members
of the Summer Immersion Program, students will have full access
to the C.W. Post Campus and its resources. Participants will receive
a certificate of completion and will be eligible for F1 student
visas. Room and board are available for out-of-town students.
