C.W. Post Professor Honored for her Role in Accountancy Education

Renovated wing enhances quality of communications sciences
and disorders program

December 4, 2002 – Students in the speech/language pathology program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y. now have access to a new clinical education environment that features the latest in technology. The campus recently dedicated the Fisher Family Clinical Education Center for Communication Disorders at the J. M. Ladge Speech and Hearing Center.

"This new wing sends a tremendous message to the students," says Joyce A. Rubenstein, Ph.D., director of the Ladge Speech and Hearing Center. "It says that we want to give them the best possible education. By providing work space featuring the latest technology – combined with our excellent courses and outstanding faculty – we are doing just that."

The new wing was made possible by a generous donation from Long Island residents Arlene and Daniel Fisher. Daniel Fisher is a graduate of the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University, while the couple's son, Jeffrey, and daughter, Sharon, both graduated from C.W. Post. Sharon graduated in 2002 with a master's degree in speech pathology. It was she who brought the speech and hearing program to her parents’ attention.

The Fisher wing, which is part of the center where children and adults can receive speech, language and hearing evaluation and therapy, the new Fisher Family wing includes lab space with state-of-the-art computers, audio and video tape recording and monitoring equipment, space for meetings, records storage and more.

During a typical semester, 20 to 30 students work out of this room. They use the Fisher wing to conduct preparatory work for the clinical practica that are required for graduation. They type up their observations, write reports, plan therapy sessions, file therapy materials, and meet with professors and other students.

"We are grateful to the Fisher Family for their generosity," says Rubenstein, who worked with Dianne Slavin, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, to plan the wing’s renovation. "The new wing further enhances a program that is already recognized for excellence. We look forward to our continued success."
