The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville celebrated
the opening of the state-of-the-art George L. Engelke, Jr./Astoria
Federal Savings Lecture Hall on Wednesday, October 8 at 4 p.m.
The renovated 195-seat room features a high-tech audiovisual system
and new seating, flooring, lighting and stage area. The Lecture
Hall, located in C.W. Posts Humanities Hall, is used daily
for academic lectures, classes, seminars and workshops.
Joseph Shenker, provost of the C.W. Post Campus said, "These
renovations will certainly have a tremendous impact on the quality
of learning that takes place within the walls of the Lecture Hall
for many thousands of students each year."
The fully modernized hall was named for George L. Engelke, Jr.,
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Astoria Financial
Corporation and its subsidiary, Astoria Federal Savings, whose continued
generosity made the modernization project possible.
"This lecture hall is the heart of Humanities Hall and its
renovation will greatly benefit the C.W. Post campus faculty and
its 13,000 student community. Long Islands premier community
bank, Astoria Federal Savings, and I are honored to co-underwrite
this project. It is another example of how we work hard to support
important education-based projects in the communities we serve and
live up to our brand promise of Putting people first,"
said Engelke, a resident of Garden City.
Engelke, a certified public accountant, joined Astoria Federal
as Vice President and Treasurer in 1971, after specializing in audit
and tax work for savings and loan associations for Peat, Marwick,
Mitchell & Co., predecessor to KPMG, LLP. Engelke was named
Executive Vice President in 1974, a member of the Board of Directors
in 1983, Chief Operating Officer in 1986 and President and Chief
Executive Officer in 1989. He was elected Chairman of the Board
in 1997.

Engelke is a member of the Board of Trustees of Long Island University.

Reserve Bank of New Yorks Thrift Institutions Advisory Panel,
is a past chairman and current member of the Community Bankers Association
of New York State, and is a member of various committees of Americas
Community Bankers. He previously served as a member of the Financial
Accounting Standards Advisory Council.
