C.W. Post Earns Prestigious Accreditation for
Nursing Programs
October 29, 2003 -- The bachelors and masters
degree programs in nursing at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University in Brookville recently obtained full accreditation
from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). An exciting fall semester for the Nursing Department,
it also began offering classes for the first time at North Shore
University Hospital in Manhasset.
"Accreditation is important as it ensures that
our degree programs provide the highest quality education available
to our students," said Dr. Minna Kapp, chairperson of the
Nursing Department. The CCNE accreditation is in effect until
2008 at which time the association will reassess the program.
Thirty-five new students began classes this fall
at C.W. Posts newest off-site nursing program at North Shore
University Hospital in Manhasset. The university signed an agreement
with North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System to offer
registered nurses the opportunity to earn their bachelors
degree in nursing."The program really meets North Shores
needs by helping their nurses further their education and become
more marketable," said Dr. Kapp.
Currently, two 14-week courses are taught at the
hospital, back-to-back, one evening per week. Each semester a
liberal arts course and a nursing class will be offered. "Nurses
work full-time," said Dr. Kapp. "With this program,
they dont have to travel to a campus. The faculty comes
to them, which makes pursuing an education much easier."
Tuition costs are approximately one third lower per credit for
the participants in the program. The Nursing Department is considering
setting up similar programs with other area hospitals.
C.W. Post boasts one of the areas most comprehensive
educational programs in nursing. The university offers a bachelor's
degree program exclusively for Registered Nurses as well as a
master of science in nursing with concentrations in Clinical Nurse
Specialist and Family Nurse Practitioner. The Department of Nursing
also offers a post-master's Family Nurse Practitioner Advanced
Certificate. The
department offers small classes, a convenient evening course schedule,
and individual attention that caters to the working professional.
