Hempstead Firefighters to Hold Bike-a-Thon
to Benefit C.W. Post Scholarship Fund
in Honor of 9/11 Victim Durrell "Bronko" Pearsall

Sunday, September 28, 2003
9 - 10:30 a.m.

Hempstead firefighter and 9/11 victim Durrell "Bronko" Pearsall, beloved for his goodness, warmth and spirit, is being memorialized by his compatriots through a series of events to raise money for the Durrell V. Pearsall Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund will endow an athletic scholarship at his alma mater, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. In the latest of a continuing series of events to raise money, a team of firefighters will bicycle from the Hempstead Fire Department to the C.W. Post Campus in Brookville on Sunday, September 28.

The bicyclers will begin at 9 a.m. at the Hempstead Fire Department on Jackson Street in Hempstead and ride to the C.W. Post Campus on Northern Blvd. (Route 25A) in Brookville.

Pearsall played offensive tackle for the C.W. Post Pioneers football team and earned a bachelor of science in physical education. He coached junior varsity sports in New Hyde Park and then became a New York City firefighter, all the while serving in the Hempstead volunteer fire department. He received several medals for heroic acts and was captain of the Hempstead Fire Department football team. Pearsall, an only child with no survivors, treated the department as his family. Pearsall died in the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001.

To date, the Hempstead Fire Department has raised $70,272 toward the endowed scholarship.
