March 5, 2003 Hillwood Art Museum
will present Esphyr Slobodkina: Abstractions from March 3
to April 12, 2003. The exhibition will explore the role this female
artist played in the New York Abstract Art movement. From her time
at the National Academy of Design to her influential role in the
founding of the American Abstract Artists, a group that has had
continuous meetings, publications and exhibitions from 1937 to the
present, Slobodkina was influential in the development of an abstract
style that was truly American. Esphyr Slobodkina donated work from
her archives to the Hillwood Art Museum in 1997, prior to her recent
death in 2002. The exhibition is curated from these holdings and
includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, costumes and designs for
childrens books.
The Museum, with generous support from the John P. McGrath Fund
of Long Island University, will present a lecture by Dr. Gail Stavitsky,
chief curator of the Montclair Art Museum and scholar on the artwork
and life of Esphyr Slobodkina, on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. This
event is free and open to the public.
The Museum will also host a Family Day on the topic of the exhibition
including music and readings from Slobodkinas famous childrens
book Caps for Sale as well as a hands-on art project. The
event will take place Saturday, March 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. There
is a fee of $25 per family of four and additional singles are available
at $9 each. Advance registration is required.
