The Redevelopment of the World
Trade Center Site
Port Authority Commissioner Anthony J. Sartor Gives an Insiders
View of the Decision-Making Process
Monday, April 14 8 a.m.
March 17, 2002 Was the selection of the final architectural
design for the World Trade Center site unbiased? What factors and
competing viewpoints were taken into account? What are the obstacles
and challenges that lie ahead?
These and other controversial questions surrounding the redevelopment
of the World Trade Center site will be addressed Monday, April 14
by Anthony J. Sartor, commissioner of the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey and a member of the selection committee for
the World Trade Center Site Architectural Design Competition. His
presentation, titled "An Insiders View: the Redevelopment
of the World Trade Center Site," is sponsored by the School
of Public Service at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
in Brookville, and will include a Q&A session. This event will
be the first in a series of legislative breakfasts called "Newsmakers
in Public Policy Leadership."
The design choice for development of the World Trade Center site
is by architect Daniel Libeskind, who depicted a soaring garden
in the sky in a 1,776-foot spire. The new building will be filled
with greenery and angular office buildings that surround a museum
and memorial spaces, all based on the foundation of Ground Zero.
The Libeskind design beat a submission that included two latticed
towers containing cultural and memorial space. An ad-hoc committee
picked the winning design in February, but not without controversy.
Many individuals and groups expressed shock and dismay at the final
selection. And while some dissention was expected, Sartor will give
the inside perspective of the entire selection process and what
transpired behind closed doors.
The event will take place on Monday, April 14, 2003 at 8 a.m. at
Top of the Commons restaurant in Hillwood Commons on the C.W. Post
Campus, 720 Northern Blvd. (Route 25A), Brookville. Doors open at
7:30 a.m.; admission to the event is $15 per person and includes
continental breakfast. Seating is limited and reservations are required.
