Port Washington resident Sally A. Wahrmann, a professor
of accountancy at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
in Brookville, was recently honored by the campus' Professional
Experience and Career Planning (PEP) office with its 2003 Faculty
of the Year Award. This honor is bestowed annually by the PEP office
to outstanding advocates of its award-winning Cooperative Education
program, which helps students gain work experience prior to graduating
from college.
PEP chose to honor Professor Wahrmann in recognition
for her continued dedication and service to the needs of both the
university and its students. "Professor Wahrmann is a constant
advocate of student involvement in the PEP program and wholeheartedly
supports experiential learning, hands-on career training and internship
opportunities," said Jeanette Grill, director of C.W. Posts
Professional Experience and Career Planning office. She serves on
the PEP advisory board and also aids recruitment efforts in the
School of Professional Accountancy. "As any business and accounting
student will attest, Professor Wahrmann's door is always open to
those seeking career advice," Grill added.
Aside from being a continuous source of support and
guidance to her students, Wahrmann also helps to train students
for, and coordinates the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
program in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service. The program
was of particular importance this year because it qualified students
to prepare Nonresident Alien returns for foreign students who visited
the university.
In addition to her service to the C.W. Post Campus,
Wahrmann takes an active role in the professional community. She
is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, where she served
on task forces and committees in the national organization's Tax
Division. Wahrmann's service also extends to the state level where
she participates as a member of the New York State Society of CPAs.
Wahrmann is a member of several other professional organizations,
including the American Society of Women Accountants and the American
Taxation Association.
Having lectured for professional organizations on
issues concerning current taxation and accounting, Wahrmann has
made presentations for the Tax and Accounting Institute at C.W.
Post, the New York Society of CPAs, the American Accounting Association
and the Charles Zwicker Tax Institute. Wahrmann is also an accomplished
writer; her work has been published in The CPA Journal, The Tax
Advisor, The New Accountant, and Taxation for Accountants.
After joining Long Island University in 1977 as an
adjunct assistant professor at the Brooklyn Campus, Wahrmann relocated
to the university's C.W. Post Campus in 1981 as an adjunct associate
professor of accounting and joined the full-time faculty in 1984.
She is currently a professor in the School of Professional Accountancy,
which is part of C.W. Posts AACSB accredited College of Management.
PEP provides paid internship opportunities called
"co-ops"(which stands for cooperative learning) for students
in every major. Through PEP and Co-op, students can gain hands-on
work experience, build a resume, receive career counseling, and
conduct job searches through on-line databases, which contain thousands
of potential employers nationwide. For additional information about
PEP or Co-op, call (516) 299-2435 or visit www.liu.edu/pep.
