Start Your Own Business Workshop at C.W. Post

Small business owners, consultants and aspiring entrepreneurs will benefit from the day-long small business workshop and conference hosted by the Continuing Education & Professional Studies Department at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University on Saturday, October 4, 2003. The "Start Your Own Business" conference will provide guidance and expert advice to people who are currently running or growing their own businesses, those who are running a business out of their homes and want to take it to the next level, and people who wish to start something new.

"We are addressing a need," says Cheryl Baldwin, Executive Director of Continuing Education & Professional Studies. "So many men and women are turning their thoughts to the advantages and benefits of small business ownership - starting their own small businesses at home such as computer repair, personal or household services, or even catering."

Workshop and conference presentations include setting long- and short-term goals, developing a business plan, using computers to gain a competitive edge, and selecting the appropriate legal and/or marketing structure. Guest speakers will include John Marino, Regional Team Leader for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) who will discuss how the SBA can aid entrepreneurs in securing proper financial backing. Other speakers include John Steinhoff, the Business Advisor for the Small Business Development Center at C.W. Post; Raymond Catanzano, Esq.; Harold L. Kestenbaum, Counsel, Farrell Fritz, P.C.; Paul Montenero, Principal, Clear Cut Computing; and Jack Mandel, Professor and Program Coordinator.

Workshop and conference topics for new and current entrepreneurs range from the simple, such as networking, to the more complex such as organizational development. The conference will serve as an introduction to the new "Start Your Own Business Certificate Program" that will begin in the Spring 2004 semester at the C.W. Post Campus.

Attendees will receive a comprehensive "Small Business Resource Guide" that will contain all the information and handouts discussed by each speaker. The event runs all day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $95 and includes lunch.
