Grammy-nominated C.W. Post Pianist to Perform Premieres
Acclaimed pianist David Holzman also honors music icon Stefan Wolpe at separate event
October 7, 2004 - Brookville, N.Y. -- David Holzman, professor of piano at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, will perform eclectic, jazz-influenced works by composers Eric Moe, Wayne Peterson and Robert Pollock Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 at 8 p.m. in Hillwood Recital Hall on the C.W. Post Campus.
It will be the first American performances of Moe’s “Three Ways to Relieve Tension” and Pollock’s “Log A Rhythms,” and the first complete performance of “Four Preludes” by Peterson, winner of a Pulitzer Prize for composition. Works of Chopin and Brahms will be included.
On Monday, Nov. 8, 2004 Holzman will present a tribute to C.W. Post’s musical tradition with a lecture and recital in the Music Building on the life and music of Stefan Wolpe -- first chairman of the C.W. Post Department of Music and one of the most influential composers and teachers of the 20th century -- and two other composers from the C.W. Post faculty, Raoul Pleskow and Howard Rovics. Holzman will perform “Elegy” by Wolpe student Matthew Greenbaum, a composer and faculty member at Temple University. Pleskow, Rovics and Greenbaum will be present to take questions.
Holzman, a widely acclaimed pianist who has been called “the Horowitz of modern music,” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Classical Instrument Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) and an AFIM Indie Award from the American Association for Independent Music for his 2003 CD, “Stefan Wolpe: Compositions for Piano (1920-1952).
