C.W. Post to Offer Free Workshop
for High School Students
and Parents: "How to Choose a Major
and a Career!"
Every year, tens of thousands of students go off to
college without knowing what they want to do for the rest of their
lives. And even those who have chosen a career path frequently have
second thoughts about their decision. Many will change their college
major several times before graduation. But ultimately students have
to choose a major and chart a course for their continued education
and their careers, yet many have no idea where to begin.
On Saturday, March 20, 2004, the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University will hold a free public workshop
titled "How to Choose a Major
and a Career!"
for high school sophomores and juniors and their parents. Experts
in academic and career counseling will offer helpful tips and practical
guidance that can save students and their families valuable time
and money.
Speakers will address many questions of interest to
high school students and their parents as they approach the college
application process. For example, what exactly is a college major?
What is a minor? How do I choose a major if I dont know what
I want to be? How important is my major? Are major requirements
the same at all colleges? What happens if I decide to change majors?
How useful are internships in determining a career path? And perhaps
most importantly, how can I discover and define my skills, values,
goals and options in order to make sound decisions about a college,
a major and a career?
The C.W. Post Campus is home of the innovative Access
Program, which offers "undecided" students comprehensive
support and guidance as they work their way through the education
and career-planning process. Each student in the Access Program
is assigned an academic advisor through the universitys renowned
Academic Counseling Center and a career counselor through its nationally
recognized Professional Experience and Career Planning office. Students
in the Access Program take a variety of courses, gain experience
and insight through carefully chosen internships, participate in
interest and skills assessment activities, and attend career-planning
workshops. They also have access to a network of more than 300 career
mentors, many of whom are successful C.W. Post alumni. This multi-faceted
approach helps students select a major by the time they reach their
junior year.
All high school sophomores and juniors and their parents
are invited to attend the "How to Choose a Major
and
a Career!" workshop. It is free and open to the public and
will take place on Saturday, March 20, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. to noon
in Humanities Hall, Room 119 on the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern
Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville.
