January 5, 2004 -- College students transfer from one institution
to another for many reasons. Some start in a community college where
they begin their higher education paying lower tuition while others
go away to school and discover they would rather be closer to home.
Regardless of their reasons, "transfer students" have
special needs and concerns. Will the new school accept all of the
credits they have already earned? Does the new school have the degree
programs they need, and flexible class schedules? Will it have cooperative
education and job placement? Scholarships?
Joshua and Garrett Tate, 22-year-old twins from East Northport,
quickly got past all of these concerns when they transferred from
Nassau Community College (NCC) to the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University in Brookville. The NCC graduates both received comprehensive
financial assistance packages from C.W. Post, including a $2,000
Transfer Incentive Award for Garrett, an art education major, and
a $3,000 Advanced Study Tuition Grant for Joshua, who is majoring
in health and physical education. And both received C.W. Posts
$3,000 Sibling Scholarship because their older brother, Travis,
is an alumnus. In addition, all of their NCC credits transferred
seamlessly to C.W. Post, which accepts up to 72 credits from two-year
colleges and 96 credits from four-year colleges and universities.
"We thought we might have to go upstate to get a good deal
on a four-year university degree," says Joshua. "But between
saving money by attending a community college for two years and
scholarships and financial aid through C.W. Post, we were able to
stay on Long Island."
Many Long Island students take advantage of C.W. Posts Joint
Admission agreements with Nassau, Suffolk, LaGuardia or Queensborough
community colleges. The Joint Admission Program provides guaranteed
transfer admission to C.W. Post without loss of course credits,
dramatically cutting the cost of a college education while enabling
students to earn a bachelors degree from a respected private
university.
More than 1,000 full- and part-time students
transfer to C.W. Post each year and the vast majority receive financial
aid, including scholarships. "Many of our transfers come from
Long Islands outstanding community college system," says
Denise Seigel, C.W. Posts associate director of transfer admissions.
"They receive as many scholarship opportunities as students
who come directly from high school. We are committed to making the
C.W. Post experience attainable for students from all walks of life."
Transfers from four-year universities are
enjoying success at C.W. Post as well, and many receive scholarships
to help pay tuition. Plus, with 110 bachelors degree programs
and 50 accelerated 5-year dual bachelors/masters degree
programs, virtually any student can find a program to suit his or
her needs. Many even stay on to earn a masters degree. And
all C.W. Post students get the benefit of personal counseling and
an award-winning Cooperative Education Program, which features paid
internships, job placement services, resume development and career
counseling.
"C.W. Post is an excellent school,"
says Garrett Tate. "The transfer process was easy, my classes
are challenging, and Im making a lot of friends."
