Palmer School of Library and Information
Science Hosts Open House
C.W. Post event will highlight school media program
located in Manhattan
Interested in helping to fill the need for K-12 librarians
in New York City public schools? Find out how when Long Island Universitys
Palmer School of Library and Information Science hosts an open house
at its Manhattan location on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 from 5 to 8
p.m.
Certified teachers working in the New York City school
system qualify for a 25 percent discount on four core school media
courses: Instructional Design and Leadership, School Media Centers,
School Media Materials and the Curriculum, and Integrating Technology
into the School Media Curriculum.
With those requirements fulfilled, students will be
on their way to completing the 36 credits required for a Master
of Science in Library and Information Science leading to certification
as a K-12 School Library Media Specialist. This degree fulfills
the New York State Department of Education requirement that all
teachers earn a masters degree; the school library media concentration
also fulfills the States requirements for certification in
that area.
The four school media core courses alone can help
classroom teachers move into a school library position, or stay
there if theyve already been placed, while they finish pursuing
their masters degree.
Students can complete the entire program at the Palmer
Schools Manhattan location at New York Universitys Bobst
Library, one of the largest open-stack research libraries in the
United States. With classes held in the evenings and on weekends,
this convenient location allows students to pursue a degree without
interrupting their career.
The open house will be held in the Bobst Library located
at 70 Washington Square South, just opposite Washington Square Park.
