Lecture: "A Woman Surviving
in a Mans World"
Broadcasting veteran Shelly Feuer Domash to speak at C.W. Post February
10
Brookville, NY For years, women have struggled to attain
success and pay equity in a historically male-dominated business
world. But as women approach hard-earned success, they often find
their continued progress impeded by a "glass ceiling."
According to broadcasting industry veteran Shelly Feuer Domash,
who will speak at the C.W. Post Campus on February 10, "Women
in business are sometimes derided for qualities that would be applauded
in their male counter parts. Men are considered assertive but assertive
women are bitchy; men can be seen as passionate but women are perceived
as emotional." How far have we really come since the days of
Ozzie and Harriet, when women were housewives and men
were breadwinners?
Domash will discuss these issues and more based on personal experience
and observations during her distinguished 30-year career as newscaster,
talk show host, anchor, writer, producer and administrator at a
free public lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10 at the C.W.
Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville. The lecture
will take place in Tilles Center, Room W-1.
From her first job where she was forced to use a bathroom that
was marked "Other" instead of "Women" to becoming
the first female director of Communications and Public Affairs for
the Town of Hempstead, Domash has witnessed and experienced countless
examples of gender discrimination.
"I have succeeded in spite of the fact that I am a woman,
not because I am a woman," says Domash. "I have spent
my career learning how to be successful in spite of the many preconceived
notions that men have about women." On February 10, Domash
will discuss her experiences and translate them into advice for
women as they strive for success.
Domashs 30-year career in radio, television and print media
began when she became the first female radio newscaster on Long
Island. Since then she has hosted her own radio talk shows, anchored
radio and television news programs, produced and hosted a womens
television talk show and written for many major publications including
The New York Times, Newsday and Police Magazine. She has also produced
and hosted numerous documentaries on topics that include drugs,
gangs and breast cancer. Domash has served as the Director of Communications
and Public Affairs for the Town of Hempstead and the Public Information
Director for the Nassau County Health Department. Domash has received
a great deal of recognition for her work and civic activities, including
awards from the Press Club, the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting
and the Nassau County Bar Association.
The lecture, "A Woman Surviving in a Mans World,"
is sponsored by the Long Island Womens Institute of the C.W.
Post College of Management. The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University is located at 720 Northern Blvd. (Route 25A), Brookville.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating is limited;
participants are encouraged to call 516-299-3124 for information
