Congressman Timothy Bishop spoke on the value of cooperative education at C.W. Post’s Professional Experience and Career Planning (PEP) Employer Appreciation Breakfast. The event, held Tuesday, May 11 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York, honored those businesses and organizations that have employed C.W. Post students as interns and paid apprentices throughout the past year. Currently, PEP utilizes more than 225 local and regional employers — from law firms and advertising agencies to television stations and health care providers.

Bishop extolled the benefits of experience-enriched education for college students who would like to get a "leg up" on their careers. This includes job placement opportunities, paid work positions and career exploration that can help bolster a student’s resume prior to graduation. Bishop’s speech also focused on the College and Job Opportunities for the Future Act that he recently introduced to Congress. This bill would foster the creation of cooperative education programs throughout the country. Bishop represents New York’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Smithtown, Brookhaven, and the five East End towns. Bishop serves on the Education and the Workforce Committee in Congress, where he is continuing his lifelong mission of increasing opportunity through education. Bishop also serves on the powerful Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he is working to reduce congestion on Eastern Long island.

Bishop began working at Southampton College of Long Island University in 1973 as an admissions counselor and rose rapidly through the ranks. During his 29 years at the College, he served in administrative positions touching almost every aspect of college life, from institutional research and planning, to financial aid and enrollment services, student activities, personnel, community relations and fundraising.

The Professional Experience and Career Planning office at C.W. Post provides paid internship opportunities called "co-ops" (which stands for cooperative learning) for students in every major. Through PEP and Co-op, students can gain hands-on work experience, build a resume, receive career counseling, and conduct job searches through on-line databases, which contain thousands of potential employers nationwide. For additional information about PEP or Co-op, call (516) 299-2435 or visit www.liu.edu/pep
